You've probably said it to yourself at some point...

When the house is tidier.

When the kids are a bit older.

When I've lost the weight.

When life calms down a little.

And then another year goes by, and the moment you were waiting for never quite arrived. But your children got taller, and the season you were in quietly closed without you ever marking it. And then you're filled with that Mum guilt and regret we all feel.

I know this feeling personally. I'm Charlene, a Mum of two and award-winning Documentary family photographer since 2018. Even before I started capturing family photography for other families, I was the one who's always held the camera in our family.

My husband has a beautiful collection of photos. I'm barely in any of them. Not because nobody cared, but because I was always the one behind the lens, and I told myself I'd sort it out later. It took me a while to realise that later has a way of becoming never!

I've genuinely never done this before in all my years as a family photographer...

I was doing some digital housekeeping in my video and photo archives this morning, and I came across so many beautiful family photos and videos it broke my heart thinking I'd need to delete the ones the families never ordered.

I couldn't help but stop and look through the gallery. Seeing how incredibly little your babies were, hearing your all chatting away on the videos...it all reminded me of how lovely it is having a memory like this to look back on! It truly flies by, doesn't it?

Right now, I'm getting ready to permanently archive my past sessions to make room for the new season, which means the unpurchased images from your session will be deleted from my working drives. Before I do that, I wanted to reach out and offer you the chance to keep the entire story of that day.

What is Documentary Family Photography? Documentary family photography is all about telling your family’s story just as it is. Think of it as a time capsule – a way to preserve the little moments, the routines, the chaos, and the joy that make your family unique.

There’s no staging or directing involved. Instead, the photographer blends into your day, capturing real interactions and raw emotions as they happen.

For example, this might mean photographing your toddler covered in breakfast crumbs or your dog chasing the kids in the garden. It’s about real life, not a polished version of it. And that’s the beauty of it. These photos show the love and connection in your family in a way that feels authentic because, well, it is authentic.

Unlike traditional family photography, which often takes place in a studio with carefully planned poses and lighting, documentary photography happens in your home or any other setting where your family feels comfortable. It’s a style that celebrates the imperfect, the unscripted, and the wonderfully ordinary.

The Half Term Juggle. I'm prepared yet it's still a juggle...

I purposely plan my time so there's minimal work over the school breaks because I learnt early on with my first born that it's near impossible to work with kids around (and when you do, you just become irritated and grumpy because you can't get anything done 😅)

So know that I will be checking emails, the socials will likely be all about the sunshine and the Southport Food Festival (which is this weekend FYI) along with my pre-planned posts.
