Last day of the Summer holidays for us and I feel this photo sums up being a parent of these two...😅

Simple phone capture but it took me about 7 frames to get one where I felt it worked together! Kids are funny beings but they're also creatures of habit so you even get frustrated thinking you've missed a great shot, be patient! It's likely they'll repeat what they did without prompting!

My top tip is to leave your camera (or phone) out and ready so it's easy to reach for should you feel inspired!

Photos are wonderful for freezing a second in time... but video does something completely different.

Video brings it all flooding back:

From the sound of their tiny toddler laugh to the way they mispronounce their favorite words, these are all memories and sounds worth preserving.

From someone who really hated hearing herself back on video, I've still pushed past my own discomfort to ensure I can capture those memories for my children to look back on too.

That’s why my family sessions are 'hybrid', because as much as you'll love having photos on your walls, the short family film is what will bring tears to your eyes 10 years from now (trust me, as the Mother of an 11 year old I know!)

It’s a cliché because it’s true: the days are long, but the years are so, so short. (I know as my youngest starts school in September and my eldest is heading to High School!!!🥹)

Before you know it, the school holidays are over, the coats get bigger, and the toddler chubby cheeks turn into grown-up child features. It can feel like it's all happening so fast but I know the perfect way to help you hit pause and slow things right down. A family video and photo session ;)

"Should we do our session at home or outdoors?"

Here’s how to choose:

At Home is best if:
• You have a newborn or toddlers who feel safest in their own environment.

• You want to remember your nursery, your living room cuddle spots, and everyday home life. Your house tells part of your family story too!

• You want a calm, weatherproof, super-relaxed vibe.

Outdoors (like the local park or woods) is best if:
• Your kids love to run, jump in puddles, climb trees, and explore.

• You love natural light, autumn leaves, or golden evening sun.

The best part? We can even mix both! Whether that be enjoying your own garden like Sara, Rav and Max here or taking a walk to your local park if you book a longer session!

I'm officially 'out of office' from this evening as I take some time away with the family. We've always needed a reset before the race to September and schools starting back (and this year is a new school for BOTH of my children 🥺)

So I thought I'd let you know on here in case you've sent me a lovely email and you're wondering why I'm not as quick to reply! I promise I will when I manage to sneak on my emails here and there!

Every mum knows this feeling... 😅

After realising he won't do it without a prompt, you hand your partner the phone and say: "Can you quickly take a nice photo of me and the kids?"

You check the camera roll later, expecting a lovely candid memory, only to find:

An photo so unflattering that violates your human rights (that one of me with my eye bags and looking so tired...even the unintentional blur isn't saving that one)

Out of 14 photos, not a single one has all eyes open.

Your head is chopped off at the top.

If you are tired of relying on your partner’s photo skills, it might be time to let a professional step in so you get photos you actually love. I know this first hand because each year even I, a professional family photographer, hire someone to capture my family too!

So, maybe share this with your partner as a subtle hint! 😉 Or be like me and book one anyway, it's time to be IN the nice photos you love taking!
