Stu Brown Photography May I present my Wildlife & Landscape Photography, as well as my Photography Workshops.
(1)

As a child at the age of 6 I had my first camera and soon after won the Langbaurgh young photographer award. My father and I would head to the loft, our make-shift darkroom, to develop our prints. I remember hanging them out to dry over the bath, struggling to contain my excitement at what they might show. However, things have moved on since those days - photography became my passion and my life.

Having run photography workshops for many years I’ve helped set up a lot of local photographers and passed my passion for capturing life on to them. (check out www.discoveryphotography.co.uk – my wedding and portrait photography website)

I’ve had work published in the Times, the Telegraph, and the Daily Mail, covered weddings in all sorts of venues and locations. I don’t think there’s anything I haven’t covered, but I’m always open to new surprises. I’ve been the official Klondike cycle race photographer for three years, many local companies have also booked me for their commercial photography. Such as SAKS, Cineworld and the North York Moors National Park authority.

I always think the guillemot is one of the most underrated birds at RSPB Bempton Cliffs

Everyone understandably gets excited about the puffins and the gannets, and don't get me wrong, I love photographing them too, but I think the guillemots often get overlooked. They don't have the bright colours of a puffin or the sheer size and drama of a gannet, yet they're every bit as fascinating.

There's something about them that I find really appealing. They seem almost shy and reserved amongst the chaos of the cliffs, quietly going about their lives while thousands of other birds demand all the attention.

I spent a while watching this one perched on the cliff face and it reminded me that wildlife photography isn't always about the loudest or most colourful subject. Sometimes it's about appreciating the birds that most people walk straight past.

For me, the guillemot deserves far more love than it gets. Every time I visit Bempton, I make sure I spend some time with them. They're a huge part of what makes the cliffs such a special place.

Don't forget you can still book my next workshop at RSPB Bempton Cliffs

I could honestly stand and watched these two for hours.

There’s something really special about the way they interact with each other. I took this at RSPB Bempton Cliffs and just found myself completely captivated watching these two paying each other such delicate attention amongst all the chaos of the colony around them.

For such powerful wild birds, moments like this feel strangely gentle and calm.

It’s little things like this that remind me why I love wildlife photography so much. Sometimes it’s not about dramatic action shots… sometimes it’s just about quietly witnessing a moment between two wild creatures and feeling lucky enough to photograph it.

I think this gannet sums up their personality perfectly
The expression just screams: “Who are you looking at?!”

Taken at RSPB Bempton Cliffs while patiently waiting for the birds to come closer, and this one suddenly popped its head up through the Campion and Plantains and started properly checking me out!

People probably think I’m just out for a nice day at the coast when they see me wandering around with the camera, but this is actually my work. Every image I take is either something I can sell, use in blogs, social media, or use to help promote my photography workshops and future wildlife days.

That’s one of the things I love about photography though. Even when I’m working, I still get to experience moments like this with such amazing wild creatures.

I’ll be back at RSPB Bempton Cliffs on the 21st June running another photography workshop too

I took this during one of the rougher afternoons at RSPB Bempton Cliffs recently. The wind was absolutely brutal, heavy showers blowing through constantly, and the gannets were having to properly fight against the conditions just to land safely.

This one honestly reminded me of a plane coming in to land… flaps down and hanging in the air against the breeze.

Moments like this are exactly why I love photographing seabirds. Even in awful weather there’s still beauty, drama and incredible behaviour to capture if you stick it out long enough.

I’ll be back at RSPB Bempton Cliffs teaching another photography workshop on 21st June, and if the birds perform anything like this again it’s going to be an amazing day

Teaching Photography at RSPB Saltholme – Wildlife, Nature and Building Confidence with a Camera

One of the things I’ve really enjoyed over the last year is teaching photography at RSPB Saltholme. It’s one of those places that just works perfectly for beginner photographers. You’ve got wildlife all around you, peaceful surroundings, great walking routes and plenty of opportunities to stop, slow down and really enjoy photography properly.

Every time I run a workshop there, I’m reminded that photography isn’t just about the pictures — it’s about the experience of being outdoors, learning something new and noticing moments you’d normally walk straight past.

That’s exactly why I love teaching at Saltholme.

Most people who come along to my workshops aren’t professional photographers. In fact, a lot of them arrive saying the same thing:
“I’ve had this camera ages but don’t really know how to use it properly.”

And honestly, that’s exactly who the workshops are designed for.

We keep everything relaxed and easy to understand, covering the basics like aperture, shutter speed, ISO and composition in a way that actually makes sense without overwhelming people with technical jargon.

Once everyone starts getting comfortable with their camera, we head out around the reserve and put it all into practice properly.

That’s when the fun really starts.

Saltholme is brilliant for this because you never quite know what’s going to appear. One minute you’re photographing reflections across the water, the next there’s a heron stepping out through the reeds or birds moving across the lakes right in front of you.

It creates the perfect environment for learning photography naturally rather than forcing it.

One of the nicest things about these workshops is watching people relax as the day goes on. Cameras come off auto mode, confidence starts to build, and people begin seeing photographs rather than just taking snapshots.

There’s also something genuinely calming about spending a day outdoors with a camera. The combination of wildlife, fresh air, creativity and slowing down for a while has a real positive effect on people.

That’s a huge part of what I want these workshops to be about.

Yes, you’ll learn photography properly, but I also want people to leave feeling refreshed, confident and inspired to keep going out with their camera afterwards.

I’ll be back at RSPB Saltholme running more beginner-friendly photography workshops throughout the year, and I honestly can’t wait for the next one.

If you’ve ever wanted to properly understand your camera, improve your photography and enjoy a relaxed day surrounded by wildlife and nature, you’d be more than welcome to join us.

RSPB Bempton Cliffs: Where the Ocean Meets the Sky – And My Special Workshop on 21st June 2026
There’s a place on the Yorkshire coast where the air feels different – sharp with salt, alive with sound, and thick with a kind of magic that stays with you long after you’ve turned for home. That place is RSPB Bempton Cliffs, and for me, it’s more than just a nature reserve – it’s somewhere my soul feels completely at rest.

I still remember the first time I walked along the cliff top paths here. Below me, the North Sea stretched out like a sheet of rippled blue glass, meeting a sky so wide it felt endless. But what took my breath away – literally – was the noise. Thousands of seabirds calling, crying, and wheeling in the air; a swirling, living carpet of wings, feathers and movement. This is one of the most important seabird colonies in the whole of the UK, and standing there, surrounded by Gannets, Puffins, Guillemots and Razorbills, you realise just how precious and wild our natural world really is.
Bempton isn’t just about the views, though spectacular they are. It’s about connection. Connection with nature, with the changing seasons, and with the incredible wildlife that travels thousands of miles just to make these towering chalk cliffs their home between spring and summer. Every visit brings something new: maybe a Puffin darting past with a beak full of sand eels, or the majestic sight of a Gannet diving from high above, folding its wings and plunging into the sea at speed. Even on a blustery day, when the wind whips off the water and the waves crash against the rocks far below, there is a deep, comforting peace here – a reminder that life goes on, wild and wonderful, no matter what.

This place has inspired me for years, and it’s why I’m so excited to share something very special with you. I’ll be hosting my Nature & Wildlife Photography Workshop right here at RSPB Bempton Cliffs on 21st June 2026 – and I’d love for you to join me.
Whether you’re just starting out with a camera or you’ve been taking photos for years, this day is all about slowing down, observing the world around us, and learning how to capture the beauty, movement and emotion of this incredible place. We’ll walk the trails together, find the best viewpoints, watch the birds in their natural habitat, and I’ll share all my tips – from composition and settings to patience and appreciation. It’s not just about taking great photos; it’s about learning to see nature differently, and carrying that wonder home with you.

Date: 21st June 2026 | Location: RSPB Bempton Cliffs, Bempton, East Yorkshire | Find out more and book your place here 👇: https://events.rspb.org.uk/events/141808?sid=eyJpdiI6IkJGNE9XRFVBSEZlL21vQjZKSC9GTGc9PSIsInZhbHVlIjoiNHJvNklRMXNlWlgwQkdhZ3FZUFljZ1djNEtkMVQ3cERhSW1aTTlOQktHWVlhRHdmRWM3UTY0Z09aczRtdDdZRldWc3BQTmxvdVhPMFRaRjkxWDBxZnc9PSIsIm1hYyI6IjRjNWE3YTFiMWExMjE0MjNiNjAyNDNhYjI4MWQ1ZDUyNjUyODU0NTU3NDg0OGUwNjBkZDM0ZjUzZDY5ZDRhM2UiLCJ0YWciOiIifQ%3D%3D

Spaces are limited, because I want to keep the group small, friendly and personal – just like the way I like to explore this coastline. Whether you come alone, bring a friend, or treat yourself to a day out by the sea, we’ll spend the day surrounded by soaring clifftops, crashing waves, and the unforgettable energy of thousands of seabirds.

For me, Bempton Cliffs is a sanctuary – a place where I feel small in the best possible way, reminded of how beautiful and fragile our planet is. I hope you’ll come and experience it with me, and leave with photos, memories, and a heart a little fuller than when you arrived.
