Data day on board Holly Mai! 🚢⚓️

Caroline and I spent Wednesday servicing acoustic receivers at the Offshore Shellfish mussel farm. These sensors track the "pings" from our tagged dogfish, rays, and lobsters so we can study their fine-scale movements. 🦞🦈

Nature had other plans, though… the receivers were completely covered in mussels! But we were lucky to find some beautiful Rainbow sea slugs living among them🌈🐚

Huge thanks to Skipper Chris and the team for a great day at sea! 🌊

Last week I caught my first ever fish on a rig I made myself!
It doesn’t look like much, but I was so buzzed to see this beautiful little long spined sea scorpion (𝘛𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴). I caught it on a running pat rig with a sand eel bait.
These fish are heavily armoured and spiky - but unlike their Mediterranean cousins, they’re not venomous. Their camouflage patterns help them blend into the rocks and weeds to ambush their prey (small shrimps/ fish)!

Yet another wonderful day out at sea yesterday!

We headed out to the Offshore shellfish mussel farm to service our acoustic receivers at the sea floor - these listening devices capture movements from our tagged animals (thornback rays, dogfish, lobsters), tagged as part of our Ropes to Reefs project! Alongside a range of transient species, including starry smoothound and black bream 🦈

The sun was shining, biscuits were flowing and the download revealed several recent detections from our dogfish and rays - they seem to love the habitat the mussel farm has to offer!

It’s always a pleasure to spend the day on board sea fever - thanks Rob and Olly ⚓️😊☀️
