One of the questions I’m often asked is whether children need to sit still and smile for photos... and the answer is absolutely not.

My photography is all about capturing genuine moments rather than perfectly posed ones. The laughter, the cuddles, the running around, the little expressions and interactions that make your family uniquely yours.

I keep sessions relaxed and child-led, giving little ones the freedom to play, explore and simply be themselves. This not only makes the experience more enjoyable for them, but it also creates photographs that feel natural, authentic and full of personality.

The best photos usually happen in between the poses ❤️

A day in my life as a photographer 📸

Morning gym, then two home studio shoots with plenty of outfit changes, a bit of coffee in between, and kitten cuddles during any small breaks.

Then it’s into editing, emails, and catching up on client chats once the shoots are done.

Running Katherine Barnes Photography from home is busy, but I love the mix of creativity, connection, and calm moments in between.

Spring at Ashton Court is such a beautiful backdrop for family sessions, wide open green spaces, soft light, and just enough room for little ones to run, explore, and be themselves 🌿

This recent family of four session was all about candid moments: the giggles while chasing, the quick hand squeezes between parents, and those in-between looks that happen when everyone forgets the camera is there.

With young children, I always lean into play and movement rather than posing, which is where the most genuine moments naturally unfold.
