Last night, after a few years of looking, we finally found our first little owl due to the kindness of one helpful photographer who we had met out while observing a barn owl. Not all photographers are willing to share locations and it was refreshing to meet someone who went out of their way to make it possible for us to achieve this dream. He doesn’t follow this page but if he did I would be saying a very big thank you ( I have already thanked him on different social media).

Today is International Owl awareness day. This photo was taken at West of England Falconry Centre. Last night we had a tawny owl flying around outside calling. We’ve yet to see it but we know it’s not too far away.

Somerset:
Not to be beaten, I decided I would return to my new spot for barn owls. The owls were far more active last night but I felt there were so many wasted opportunities as far as my photography was concerned. At times, the owls came close but my camera would not lock on to them or the owls were flying a fair distance away and were miniscule in the frame. At one time, we saw three owls together - two chasing each other and one waiting patiently outside the box. On another occasion, an owl flew straight over my head - leaving only a few feet between me and the owl - no sound whatsoever - totally silent.

I wish I could share with you the beautiful hissing sounds that could be heard from inside the box - the babies saying "feed me, feed me".

It was an enjoyable evening for wildlife viewing and an absolutely awful evening for my photography! I need to practise photographing owls as it's always the same old story!

It's been a busy couple of weeks. Both the peregrines and the kestrels have bred successfully here in Bristol.

Dressed up in camo and hidden in amongst the bushes, I managed to photograph the juvenile peregrine landing on one of it's favourite perches.
