Skomer Island, famed for its nesting puffins, is wild, sunbaked and beautiful on our late July visit.

We visit at the very end of season for puffin spotting. Whilst we spot a handful out at sea during our hike around the island perimeter, there are seemingly none left in the thousands of small burrows that pockmark the hills and cliffs facing the emerald waters.

As we resignedly head back to our return boat, we suddenly spot a lone puffin pottering in and around its nest - likely one of the last birds to leave the island until their mass return next year.

Thailand's west coast is adorned with countless tropical islands. Boats scuttle back and forth ferrying tourists, locals and fishermen between shores. Every boat we see has a colourful flower garland on its prow, a sacred offering meant to honor and appease the spirit of the water.

After a guided temazcal ceremony, we amble around San Sebastian, a small village up in the Sierre Madre mountains of Oaxaca. Pace of life is blissfully slow here, a genuine feeling of escapism from the frenetic modern world. We stock up on chocolate from the local bodega, saying hello to the shop doggy as we do so.

As the sun sets in the north-western tip of Bali, the island's small Islamic community zoom along the east-west coastal road of Banjuwedang to Eid al-Fitr festivities. Whole familiies cram onto motorbikes, dressed to-the-best in vivid and dazzling outfits. As I walk back to our hotel, I'm greeted with smiles, waves and streaks of dazzling colours as they blaze on past for a breaking of the fast-feast.

Chocolate hills - San Sebastian, Oaxaca, Mexico

San Sebastian, a small village nestled in Oaxaca's Sierra Madre mountains. A place of pine forests, songbirds, shamanic practice and steaming temazcals. As the sun dips below the horizon, we amble around as people return from work, pick up dinner and hang out in the cool early-evening air.

Oaxaca, a city of crumbling colonial architecture, distinct Zapotec history and subversive political protest. Street pottering is an activity in itself here, and as we wander down one street, I catch a builder lugging bricks into one of the city's many courtyards.
