Met up with my man in Morocco, and the Dar Souiri (Association Mogador), to get the ball rolling for talk here in Essaouira, introducing the book, workshops, my mission here in Morocco.

Our book, Essaouira: Zen & the Art of Riding a Camel has been placed in the high end of the market at Blurb, for purchase. We love it. It inspires us. Eventually it will be available in a less expensive form.

Inspired by his father's tales of hitchhiking from Glasgow to Tangier in a Kilt Alan sets of to Essaouira with his sights on conquering the windswept citadel using only his wit and well-trained eye for capturing a great picture.

Riad Azawan and A Day of Photography Workshops

October 2023 sees the start of a collaboration between Riad Azawan in Marrakesh and award winning photographer Alan McArthur. All ages levels and cameras are welcome to join Alan for an amazing day out and about meeting the faces in their spaces under the guise of street life photography and portraiture, as well as all the wrapping of amazing architecture.Guaranteed to be a great day out starting at about 2 or 3 pm and finishing after the sun sets with a traditional meal and discussion with feedback. You will leave inspired, with some useful tools and some great photographs. We offer 1 to 1, closed groups and take a maximum of 4. Tea with your sugar?

A cuppa cha Maroccan?..That's Mint tea........ Or...........the reality..........it's more like tea with your sugar............I have found ways to politely decline offers.............and feel like I'm always running away from the thought of drinking what really is liquid white sugar......however I do enjoy watching them pouring it .....and pouring it back in to the pot....and then out and down again....from a great height until the alchemy of air and water is perfect......You can of course learn to perform the Moroccan Mint Tea ceremony somewhere....or just join us for 'Tea and Photography....The masterclass' ......

It's all art......The fish...the birds ....the cats.......the sun in the sky and the sand at our feet.........What our workshop really does is celebrate the art of life .......spend and day with us engaging all the senses....yes you'll come out of it with some great photographs...tips to take away .......but that's along with an intimate insight for your taste buds....you'll have a great walk and talk ....and we''ll all be hugging at the end of it.....It's a win win situation.....

Pescatarians enjoy.....Vegetarians....please turn away..........And lets meet Ibrahim ....the man behind the art of fish..........What a cracking assortment of fish and creepy crawlies he's put together to get the taste buds all firing up......Forget what they're called ....and let's get them on the barbie.......!!........

You are greeted in the port by the sound of the seagulls as they float over the arrival of a fish boat, light dancing around the men at work and the ships being built, cats dozing off in corners. The Medina is like trip back inn time with men and their donkeys drawn carts heading to market. Inside the Medina you have the almost abandoned Jewish ghetto which is like a crumbling stage of an old theatre.

What we’ll do

Our workshop accepts all levels, all cameras and all ages starting in the port with all the fish and cats and seagulls and boats. We slowly meander through the old narrow lanes of the ancient medina stopping at the old Jewish ghetto ...........The workshop ends with an evening of fish grilled on a terrace that overlooks the medina. This workshop is a chance to to see the world through Alan, pick up some useful tips and experience the real Essaouira.
