PART 2
The ruins in Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds are the remains of the Abbey of St Edmund, once one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in medieval England.
The site became famous as a place of pilgrimage after the body of Saint Edmund, a king who was killed in 869, was brought there. People travelled from across England and Europe to visit his shrine, making the abbey extremely wealthy and important.
Construction of the abbey began in the 11th century, and it grew into a huge religious complex with a massive church, gatehouses and surrounding buildings.
However, in 1539, the abbey was destroyed during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries. The buildings were stripped and left to fall into ruin, with locals even using the stone for other construction.
