Warren

On my second to last day of my residency in Gozo I was blessed with Warren’s presence we spoke intensely and travelled to different places. It spoke volumes to who Warren is.

“I think with age you become unapologetic = you do not need anybody’s permission to be whom you are, to live your truth.”

What story do you want to tell?
The arc of living in Malta in the 80s, the freedom and expression I find in today’s embracing the word ‘q***r’, when as a child this word was a signifier for ‘otherness’, fear, disgust etc... for example wishing I knew about the word ‘pansexual’ when I was younger.

What does it mean to be you?
Well, I think the journey of discovery never stops. When I read the question, the word ‘Freedom’ comes to mind. I think this word defines me and the sacrifices I have made to maintain the ‘illusion of freedom’. I think curiosity and a thirst for knowledge keep me driven.

What would you like these photos to portray?
Self-acceptance and a joie de vivre.

Ritty.2025.

Artist residency

In conversation with Ritty, I closely related to how she feels about gender expression and her experiences. This part might hit some notes for some people out there.

“The challenges really began when I cut my hair short. I was sometimes mistaken for a man, kicked out of women’s restrooms, laughed at in airports, or even introduced as my partner’s son. My look has always been quite androgynous, which made it difficult for people to know how to address me. At first it upset me a lot and honestly, it still stings sometimes. But over time I’ve realised that not all of it comes from hate; often it’s just a lack of understanding. People naturally want to label things, even within the LGBTQ+ community, and recognising that helped me expect less and accept more.

These days, I care far less about how I’m addressed because I feel at ease with myself. Some days I lean very feminine, other days very masculine, and embracing that fluidity has been a game changer.“

I pride myself in getting to a point within the Maltese q***r community where my work as a drag artist is being seen as a cornerstone and given some importance in what it means to be visible and non-compromising in artistic expression.”

Unfolding, is an evolving series about the stories of LGBTQ+ community. How the social, political and cultural environments affect our identity. This series looks at connection, memory and the multi-faceted parts of us.

I am excited to announce that I will be joining the artist residency programme with in Malta from 17th -31st October. I will be continuing one of my series Unfolding.

This year ***rphotocollective are in this year’s for the duration of October. We are thrilled to be chosen to be exhibit and show our work as a collective.

It will be shown until the first week of November at 🔥🔥

The theme this year is Common Ground. In this series of photographs we gave our subject an object we care about. In my case it was my kickboxing gear. I aired through some direction but otherwise let the person interact with it in a juxtaposing environment. You observe new movement unfold, facial expressions and exploration. It is pending the questions of empathy how do we connect to our subjects as photographers . The person cared for my object because it means something to me and began to share the passion in their own way.

In a collective our common ground is photography a place to share, explore ideas and critical thoughts.

This workshop is for every level of photography but having the basic understanding of how a camera works is helpful.

This is for people who are wanting to expand their knowledge and understanding of how to connect with a sitter, set intentions and how to create story in collaboration with a subject using lighting, backgrounds, poses and conversation.

All photos taken from shoot with the beautiful it was shot with honesty and reflection.
Every story needs different levels of connection making decisions on lighting, the environment changes or textures around can easily change photograph.

I will be running a documentary photography workshop at on Monday 30th September. Highlighting the connection of light and emotion in a photograph. Here’s a few explanations of my choices.

1. Three warm light hanging on the bed
2.Lit by the blue light post sunset three house lights hanging on the four poster bed
3. Same as 1
4. Only warm lighting. We were well into the shoot at this point and there was different emotion in the air.
5 and 6. Were taken at the start of the shoot using specialised photography lighting.
7. Movement I just like movement in my photos

We will be creating zines based on
- q***r narratives
- creative process
- from inspiration to fruition
- developing ideas
- and he power of lighting

This is a photography based workshop but you do not have to be a photographer to join aiming to be a fun, alternative way of creative thinking.
