Set out today heading through the Cairngorms and was SHOCKED to spot the illusive golden eagle. I have had sightings before on the Island of Mull but had mixed conformation on the sighting.
Alot of the time due to such good food source the common buzzard are much larger in scotland and can be mistaken for these magnificent birds.

On todays occasion a single wing beat and this beast was airbourne. He flew low and slow through the valley below then sored high into the thermals. It was literally a barn door sized bird in the air! there was no question in my mind what i was looking at!

It was a male Golden Eagle.......
I can now tick that off my list.
Thankfully for extra reassurance RSPB Scotland have confirmed my sighting as a large male.

Thank you to all the people who messaged asking "Please post your airborne shots"
Well unfortunately I did not go this year, instead a few months ago I visited RAF FAIRFORD for The Royal International Air Tattoo.
Enjoy.

Over the bank holiday I spent some well earned family time away in Guernsey visiting friends.
We took a trip over to the island of Herm. I was told about the possibility of seeing puffins on the island ready to start nesting. I was over the moon to spot a small colony on the face of a rocky cliff. They soon headed into the water to raft around before returning onto the rock face. The distance that I spotted them is a long way so picture quality is not perfect but still a result and joy to watch.

Hello Everyone, long time no post! sorry about that.
As many of you may know i LOVE owls!
I have been after spotting a tawny owl for years.
Thankfully a good friend of mine works for the forestry commission. In a conversation over the bank holiday he told me they regularly hear owls in the area he looks after.
So with that information i needed to go and have a scout around.
To my absolute joy the first visit i could hear a screech up in the trees...tracked it and after some distance spotted this lovely tawny high in the canopy. Now you are right in thinking tawny owls are nocturnal...but this time of year they have young owlets so they tend to roost close to the nest to watch for daytime predators. They sleep with one eye open as the saying goes. With that in mind i took a few shots and then watched on from a distance through the binoculars.
Love it!

Spent the afternoon at Pulborough Brooks with my dad. Spotted the famous white tailed sea eagles who have popped over from the isle of wight release project. They was a good distance away but you can still gauge the size of the juvenile birds sitting high up in a tree (unfortunately no clear pic)

But we did spot a snipe wadding around the edge of the frozen lake.
