Rush Hour

Starlings roosting on Wednesday in the rain. These time-lapse videos depend on a clear background for the murmuration to stand out against. Grey, rainy days are just perfect as long as the rain isn't blowing into the lens. Footage repeatedly copied, pasted and offset to create starling trails.

Some nights the starlings align.

It's always a bit hit and miss setting up a tripod for a murmuration, you can never be quite sure where the starlings are going to do their thing, so you can easily have the camera pointing in the wrong direction.

On Monday I got lucky. It was a low tide and the sea was fairly calm so I was able to get out quite far on the beach and get a low viewpoint - the birds always stand out better against the sky.

The first batch to arrive kept their action very neatly within the framing I had guessed upon. The sky was grey but flat, perfect for the best definition.

I've kept this video at over 8 minutes. I don't expect you to watch it to the end but it is a very relaxing view.
