With breeding season approaching, nuthatches become increasingly focused on territory, food availability, and suitable nesting cavities.

Once established, breeding pairs may raise several chicks, with both parents feeding and defending the young after hatching.

Heavy lift-off.

Great cormorants are powerful diving birds, but weighing on average around 3kg, becoming airborne is rarely graceful.

Their heavy bodies and wet plumage often require a prolonged, energy-demanding take-off across the water’s surface.

**Seasonal Bond**

Razorbills re-establish pair bonds when they return to the same narrow cliff ledges each year.

Males use a series of courtship displays — holding the bill upright, gaping to reveal their bright yellow mouth, bill-clicking, and brief wing flashes — to attract a mate or reinforce an existing bond.

Red deer can pick up disturbance through scent alone. In this instance, the stag’s response wasn’t flight — it stopped, searched, and located my position.

I stayed with it as it rejoined the herd.

I’ve shared more from this encounter on my website — I’ll leave the link in the comments.

Hidden in plain sight.

Blending into the rocks, this Atlantic fur seal is almost impossible to spot at first glance.

Their colouring and behaviour allow them to disappear into the shoreline — a useful advantage when resting between foraging trips.

After spending days at sea feeding, they return to land to rest and recover before heading back out again.

This isn’t a gull… nor is it a pigeon.

The Snowy Sheathbill is actually more closely related to plovers and sandpipers, and is the only land bird to live year-round on the Antarctic continent.

An opportunistic scavenger, it steals regurgitated krill and fish from penguins and feeds on almost anything it can find — from carrion to waste.

Identifiable as a shorebird by its lack of webbed feet, it also has bare skin on its face rather than feathers — preventing 'face-icing' in the Antarctic chill.

Its Latin name, Chionis albus, translates to “snow white”.

The robin’s song feels gentle — but it tells a different story.

The robin’s woodland song carries through the trees — marking territory and attracting a mate.

Despite their soft appearance, they are highly territorial — quick to chase off intruders and defend their space year-round.

When the chicks arrive, both parents take on feeding duties until they are ready to fledge.

🦅Red kites aren’t specialist hunters 🦅

They spend much of their time watching — scavenging, circling, and waiting for opportunity.

The more confident birds move first; others hesitate and miss their chance.

They can often be seen over freshly cultivated fields, alongside crows and jackdaws — drawn in by the chance to pick over carrion or take unearthed prey.
