Adding salvaged wood battens to the back of the frames. These battens are cut from larger beams of old but high quality timber collected over the years on the farm by my mum’s partner.

This adds rigidity to the frames and makes the float mount possible. As I worked away on these, the brilliant produced a number of archival pigment prints from the series Poppy Promises.

For a sharp finish, Alec at Fresh Aire mounted each of the prints to Alu DiBond. The next step involves joining Aluminium mounted prints to the solid oak frames…

More insights coming soon…

I’ve been meaning to reflect on the past weeks, and share some good news of things to come.

But these first glimpses of sunshine are precious, and the seasonal change has had me seeking moments of quiet in nature.

This is where I have found myself more often as of late. With no restrictive aims or intentions beyond the simple pleasure of watching the world unfold within the viewfinder.

I hope that I’m forever astounded by the beauty and wonder that can be found in the small and commonplace.

Even within the limited parameters of the viewfinder, life bursts forth to unravel in time.

Recognising the intricate beauty in the small and commonplace often invites me to think of the vast scale and complexity of the universe at large.

That from each moment to the next, across the planet, life in its many forms is unified in constant movement so intricately woven down to the smallest minutiae of detail.

The inimitable Ai Weiwei photographed earlier this week for the Berliner Zeitung.

I’d reached the last two frames on the roll and Ai suggested pulling his hood over to cover half of his face. I agreed, looked down through the loupe and turned the focus. Watching it move from the hem of the hood, across his nose, and towards his returning gaze.

Thank you to Ai and Dongxu, and for commissioning the portraits.

Photographs for the FT Life & Arts Travel Story ‘My weekend at Wuthering Heights’ by Maria Crawford.

I’m grateful that I got to begin this year atop the blustery Brontë country moorland, following the call of falling water, and bracing the cold before returning to the stone cobbles of Haworth.

Icy paths that twist through heather brought me to Top Withins, a ruined farmhouse perched high in the moors that is thought to have inspired Wuthering Heights.

To everyone that came to see Poppy Promises exhibited in the past months, thank you for coming along and giving the project such a special reception.

Those of you who bought the book, shared a kind word, or even just picked it up and spent a moment turning the pages, it truly means the world to me.

To bring the year to a close, Guest Project Space ( ) hosted an exhibition for Poppy Promises; bringing together nineteen photographs from the series.

Each photograph was carefully printed by Fresh Aire ( ) mounted on Aluminium DiBond, and presented in frames that I made myself on the farm where the project was photographed over the past eight years.

This week, a small section of the show will be travelling to Berlin to coincide with a the launch of the book at .berlin

I will also be in conversation about the project with my good friend at Bildband. If you’re in the city come join us, or tune online at 7pm CET this Thursday.

Spotting Poppy Promises in the New Statesman’s ‘Photo books of the year 2025’ list was a very warming moment and a great way to bring last month to a close.

I am very grateful to Gerry Brakus for selecting the book and for her beautiful words;

“I first encountered these photographs when Thomas Duffield came to see me with his portfolio, and they stayed with me long after. Made in the long shadow of family addiction, the work is careful, tender and brave. The book holds fear and love in the same frame, without sentiment or spectacle. Seeing it realised so beautifully now feels deeply earned – a body of work shaped by endurance, attention and an extraordinary generosity of feeling.”
