Born and raised in Bradford, Peter Tate has spent over five decades creating opportunity where there once was none. From youth clubs to classrooms, and from Bradford to Jamaica, his life’s work has been about opening doors for others to walk through.

His philosophy is simple: communities must build from within. Peter’s approach has always been about “growing your own” - giving people the tools, confidence, and belief to sustain themselves.

You can view Peter’s full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

Out of the darkness of loss, Emma Conally-Barklem found purpose. A writer, poet, yoga teacher and grief activist from Bradford, Emma transforms mourning into meaning - teaching that every tear, every conversation, and every poem can be an act of connection.

When her mother died in 2018, the world she knew collapsed. She kept going, believing what society told her - stay strong, keep busy - until the silence became unbearable.

You can view Emma’s full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

Shabs is a Yorkshire-born Kashmiri Muslim woman who describes herself simply as a lover of humanity. She is an auntie, a wife, a sister, a daughter and a voice that refuses to be silenced.

Her story began in Keighley, surrounded by people of many faiths and backgrounds. But everything changed when she witnessed the atrocities in Palestine and discovered how deeply the UK government was complicit.

You can view Shabs’ full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

Cain Speck is a Black radical communist whose politics were forged in the working-class streets of Bradford. He grew up surrounded by solidarity and struggle - neighbours sharing what little they had, communities uniting against racism, and families surviving together under systems designed to divide them.

Cain fights not for reform, but for permanent revolution - for a world free from capitalism, racism and all systems that reduce human life to profit. He dreams of a future where people are measured not by what they earn, but by how they live, learn and love.

You can view Cain’s full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

Gemma Louise Jackson is the beating heart of Lilly’s Café in Wibsey - a space built on kindness, resilience, and the power of ordinary people. Her activism is quiet but powerful. It lives in the thousands of hot meals she
has served, in the warmth offered to parents who can finally eat with their children, and in the simple acts of care that ripple outward.

You can view Gemma’s full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

For decades, Mollie Somerville has quietly woven compassion into every part of her life. She taught English to newcomers, raised three sons, and with her husband hosted homeless young people through Bradford Nightstop.

In retirement, her concern for the planet grew urgent. She joined Just Stop Oil in 2022, trained in peaceful protest, and took part in a symbolic act at the National Gallery, throwing soup at Van Gogh’s Sunflowers to protest misplaced priorities.

You can view Mollie’s full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

Jerry Crawford is a Bradford community activist, mentor, DJ and cultural pioneer whose life has been defined by giving back. Born in Saint Kitts and Nevis and raised in Manningham, by the age of 11 he was distributing leaflets for local campaigns in Sloane Square, not realising he was already part of a tradition of working-class resistance.

You can view Jerry’s full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

Tanu Patel is a mother, grandmother, and activist whose story begins in defiance. Married at sixteen and divorced by her twenties, she broke every rule her community expected her to follow. In 1985, when divorced mothers were expected to give up their children, Tanu fought back - not just for her
children, but for her voice.

You can view Tanu’s full story as part of Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time exhibition at South Square Centre until November 9th.

Becoming Bradford: Activists of Our Time is now on show until November 9th at South Square Centre, Thornton.

This project has been a labour of love - not just from me, but from each of the ten activists who shared their stories. Stories that are raw yet intimate, contemporary yet timeless, beautiful yet painful, political yet personal, and tender yet fierce.

I would love for you to visit the exhibition, especially in the wake of rising global and local political crises, and against the backdrop of flags appearing throughout the Thornton area. Come and view these timely stories of fellow Bradfordians.

If you’re around on November 7th (5–7pm), join us for a samosa at South Square to celebrate the closing of the exhibition.

A selection of both digital and analogue portraits taken at the Parish Church of Saint Wilfrid, Lidget Green. Bradford.

This was such a wonderful afternoon capturing the volunteers and members of the church to celebrate it’s 120th anniversary.
