If you decide to do your Big Butterfly count at Birdland Park and Gardens this weekend you won't be disappointed. I saw lots there today in the wild flower area near the cafe and on the buddleia opposite the Caribbean Flamingos. Gorgeous planting at Birdland.

We've been looking through some of our old photos from Birdland Park and Gardens and thought you might enjoy seeing these Flamingo shots again. Last we heard, there were 24 eggs being sat on by the Greater Flamingos, so here's hoping we get some more chicks to photograph this year.

We were delighted to work with Jack yesterday. He is 11 and was very excited to be using his Nikon for the first time. I took a photo of him in action which you can see below and the other four photos were taken by Jack...you can even see the one he took when I was taking his picture! Well done Jack, we think you took some great shots.

Toby came to us to get familiar with his camera a couple of years ago and is now currently studying A Level photography. We were delighted to hear that Toby has just come runner up in the Young Photographer category of the South West Coast Path Photography Awards. As you can see here, these photos are on display at Paddington Station.
About his image ā€œGhost of Plastic Wasteā€ Toby says ā€œThe plastic waste is shown ghost like as it flutters in the wind trapped up the barb wire. The purple fields and the dark sky represent the toxicity of the plastic and the damage that we are causing to our environment.ā€
We think it’s a really great image Toby. We’re really delighted to see that you have continued to pursue your photography and have taken it to the next level. Many congratulations on your award.

I just looked through the winning images in the "Something beautiful" category of CUPOTY and they are stunning. The one you can see here is dying tulips which have been frozen (must clear the freezer out and try this!!) but the winner was taken with an iphone and is a reflection in a puddle.....take note and look for beauty everywhere and remember the best camera is the one you have with you so if it's your phone still take the picture!

Winners revealed!Ā 11Ā inspirational pictures onĀ theĀ themeĀ of Something BeautifulĀ and the stories behind them. See themĀ allĀ atĀ www.cupoty.com.

They will also appear in next week's Amateur Photographer magazine.

The CUPOTY CHALLENGE is supported by Affinity Photo ().

šŸ™Œ Thanks to our judges David Maitland,Ā , James Cutmore (picture editor at BBC Science Focus), and for their time and expertise.

We've been delighted to photograph the Cassowary chick at Birdland over the past six months and it is lovely to see how it has grown in that time. Here's a couple of photos from each shoot. First of all September when it was a few weeks old, then November and then today the 19th February. The Cassowary male is always close by but the Birdland staff assist us and give us permission to get close to the wire, slowly and safely, in order to get these images.

Fellow photographers, you may enjoy perusing the winners of the IGPOTY 18 competition which were announced on Friday. I was really pleased to be awarded "Finalist" in the Beauty of Plants category and you can see the image "Pot of Gold" if you follow the link in the article below. There's also an exhibition of several of the winning photographs at Kew Gardens for the next month and then travelling around other beautiful gardens. I also have an image on display as part of that exhibition. I hope you enjoy seeing these, I find looking at beautiful photography on a dull, grey February day very relaxing!
