I'm so deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend Andy Cahill last weekend. Andy wasn't just someone I had worked with over the years. Andy was someone I considered a friend. He came to our wedding with his wife, Andrea, and when we weren't working flat out, we'd always have time to catch up and geek out about the latest lighting equipment over a coffee or even chat about the latest gossip on the phone. Andy loved his work, possibly more than I - which always blew my mind. But we knew why. Because he found his calling, he was one of the best in the game. Everyone felt at ease when Andy was on set. He became legendary. Andy was a reliable, trustworthy, dependable and talented individual who wouldn't give up until we achieved precisely what we intended. He would do it whilst keeping his cool, with a level head and approached every challenge with a considered, calculated approach and forever with the right tool for the job. What made Andy truly unique was his compassion for others. He cared deeply about doing everything he could to make the best out of every situation and offering as much guidance and support as he could, without judgement and regardless of where you were in your career.
When I met Andy many years ago, I was photographing some products in his studio. It was a challenging shoot, I was inexperienced in studio photography, and I quickly realised I was well out of my depth. Andy subtly (so the client wouldn't notice I was panicking) whispered some advice in my ear, and we made a few tweaks together. It saved the shoot, and he opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at lighting. I owe a lot to Andy over the years. His guidance and hard work on the many shoots we completed to introducing me to many great people in the industry. Andy had a significant impact on me and my career; I will miss him a lot. We'll do everything we can to keep his legacy alive within The Picture House. And to keep him alive in our memories with the many funny stories from our time on set together.
