🍺 THE ROYAL COTTAGE 🍺
The Royal Cottage a formerly historic coaching inn located in the peak district.
The pub is famously closed long-term, with reports indicating it ceased operations following the passing of the landlord in 2023.
Early Origins: The building was in use as an inn as early as 1805. It was established around the time the Leek-Buxton road was turnpiked to serve passing travelers, packmen, and traders.
The "Royal" Legend: By 1833, the inn adopted the name Royal Cottage. This was rooted in a local, albeit mistaken, belief that Bonnie Prince Charlie (Prince Charles Edward Stuart) stayed there during his 1745 uprising.
Traditional Character: For decades, it operated as a highly traditional, one-room local pub. It was renowned for having no draught ale on tap—serving only bottled beers—and for its incredibly limited opening hours or unique "knock on the door" policy.
