Limestones pavements off the path on the trail to Orton, Cumbria. These are formed from rock laid down in the sea around 350 million years ago, the deep fissures (grikes) caused by erosion from water filtering through the glacial debris left after the last ice age. That’s a lot of history.

We are walking the Coast to Coast. It’s Grasmere rain today but the walk to here has been in beautiful sunshine. This is the view from the summit of Haystacks, described by Wainwright as the ‘ best fell -top of all’. Here you can see onto Crummock Water and then on to the Irish Sea and on into Scotland.

This week I headed to the Baltic, Gateshead to view the Art and was treated to wonderful views of the Kittiwake colony nesting on the Ledges. This is the furthest inland Kittiwake colony in the world. The Baltic is always worth a visit but especially so now in nesting season.
