Today is National Cat Day, in Italy!

I lived with cats for most of my life, so I'm very happy that my wife and I adopted Figaro last month. Our very own little chubby panther 🖤🐈‍⬛

Here's a family album of her "cousins" over the years!

One Content Cat

So we adopted Figaro a few weeks ago from RSPCA Milton Keynes & N. Bucks Branch — don't be fooled from the name, she's a mighty black panther restricted in the body of a (sometimes) lapcat.

It's hard now to imagine a time before Fifi, she's always with us — and always making us go "aww look the silly panther there!"

Happy Valentine Day, Fifi!

Red Squirrel in Visaginas

This year I have not posted nearly enough squirrels, despite having taken a few pictures of them in Milton Keynes and in Taiwan, and having one nesting in the tree I can see by the window I'm sitting by right now — this last one is very scaredy and not friendly at all, so the magpies, crows and the slightly bolder robins end up getting the scraps and crumbs instead.

Speaking of scaredy and not friendly squirrel, here's (another) red squirrel from Visaginas that we tried to stalk last year. They really don't like coming close to humans, but they're so nice and red that I still want to post them.

The Blue Magpie

One of our objectives during this year's visit to Taiwan was to attempt to see a blue magpie, one of Taiwan's most iconic birds. For that, we had prepared ourselves to spend quite a bit of time in the mountains around Beitou — but the unseasonably hot weather made it very hard to see any of them.

By the time we completed our lap around the island, the rainy season started, and the idea of going back to the mountains was not significantly appealing, so we changed our plans to visit the Taipei Botanic Gardens, which supposedly have a few blue magpies all year round.

Little did we know that a group of blue magpies are known to nest in the middle of the avenue just past our hotel — we eventually noticed the signs warning us about their presence, and their aggressiveness during the nesting and fledgling periods.

So we stopped – literally on our way to the gardens – and admired the two who birds that just decided to show themselves up. Neither of them was particularly keen to be photographed up close, so this is the best shot I could take. But, hey, blue magpies!

From Hell (of Beppu)

Of all the hells in Beppu, Chinoike Jigoku is one of my favourite, and I have a lot of good pictures taken in front of it. The blood red colour, and the hot steam raising, particularly with the rainy weather, just give it a perfect movie-like atmosphere, which I couldn't have missed.

Last week, Ukraine celebrated its Day of Independence. It was a bittersweet occasion, like it has been for the past three years, as its Independence is being fought for with literal lives.

But Ukrainians, like I have time and time again had the opportunity to witness, won't let anything discourage them.

And so this year, my lovely wife .sp and I spent the day with the Ukrainian community in Milton Keynes, who has welcomed us since we moved in from London.

Yesterday, women and children from Ukraine Appeal Charity / Українці в Мілтон Кінс and Українська суботня школа-клуб «Соняшник» have performed at the historical Bletchley Park, in honour of the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2.

I had the honour of being able to take a few candid shots of the performance, on the backdrop of the Park's mansion.

No matter what happens next, Ukrainian people are strong, never lost courage or hope, and never stopped fighting all the while helping each other out.

As an Italian and British citizen, I'm proud that neither of my countries are wavering in their support.

Slava Ukraini!

Milton Keynes Rose

Not to be confused with the public space with the same name, this striking flower was pointed out by my wife on our walk through Campbell Park, just a few steps from homonym Milton Keynes Rose.
