Curlew in the golden light of evening up on the hill. The light last night was beautiful and not a breath of wind after the heat of the day. It was one of those late spring evenings when everything feels still, calm and cool as the sun lowers toward the horizon.

Back home and enjoying the vibrant spring greens of Scotland in May. I love this time of year, nearly as much as I love the autumn, when the fresh greens of new growth are out and the days stretch out ahead of us. We’ve had some friends up and getting out everyday and making the most of it has been wonderful.

Loved capturing a few of that classic flamingo 🦩 pose.

Greater Flamingos as the salt pans just outside of Faro. Their beautiful figure set against the morning light as it began to rise higher in the sky and the temperature began to soar.

Greater Flamingos 🦩 hanging out in and around the salt pans just outside Faro. Fantastic seeing these beautiful birds in the flesh, their pink feathers and legs showing strong when airborne in particular.

I was pretty happy to catch these guys toward the end of my final sunrise walk of the week. A few more images to come.

Another in that beautiful dawn light as the sun broke the horizon and set the water ablaze. This Black-winged Stilt, one of many, picking its way through the salty water searching for food almost silhouetted against the light. What a beautiful morning.

On our last morning I headed out at sunrise for a walk to the salt pans to try and find the flamingos. The sun was just cresting the horizon and suddenly the nearby pools of water were ablaze with burning orange hues silhouetting a group of Black-winged Stilts feeding in the morning light. This was the first morning where the constant breeze had dropped and the water was quietly still creating some truly stunning reflections.

I shot way too many images here, it was a real challenge to pick some faves but these two are particularly serene.

Black-headed weaver caught in the evening light. I was just beginning to walk back to the car when this little guy alighted just in front of me and let me grab a few frames before darting off back into the reeds. I couldn’t believe how close he was, most likely due to the lake side being frequented by walkers, runners and bird watchers daily. One of my fave images of my week in the Algarve.

Very glad I took my 180-600 on the family holiday to the Algarve. I managed a few trips out and was chasing a decent image of the Azure winged magpie all week. This was my favourite, caught in the evening light at the edge of a field. 👌

White storks on the Ria Formosa against the backdrop of Faro. It’s fantastic seeing these birds so close and out hunting for food amongst the winding waterways of the wetlands.

Azure-winged Magpie. These beautiful birds are everywhere here and I’m absolutely in love with the blue of their feathers. I’m hoping to get some better shots before we leave, but these will have to do for now!
