How amazing are these pop-up cards?!?

It's was a joy to visit the lovely people at Dawsons Art and Craft Emporium on The Crescent in St Annes, for this 'Big Picture' marking .

I will always try to use my platform in local news to help promote small, family-run businesses across the Fylde who are providing a good product/service for local people.

As well as cards, Dawsons sell a brilliant range of top-quality art and craft supplies, hobby kits, and offer a professional framing service. They have been my go-to place for art supplies since they opened, as they sell top brands that have become increasingly hard to find for us who would rather not shop online. They are also a genuinely lovely family who will go out of their way to help people.

It was great to be back at Showtown for this fun photoshoot at the weekend.

The brief was to get an image that could be used in the local paper to encourage local talent to audition for the Showtown cast, by showcasing at least one of the roles available.

I wanted dramatic backlighting that would separate the subject from the background, whilst also drawing attention to some aspects of the scenery that felt most appropriate for each character.

Framing the elephant's eye with the ringmaster's arm took quite a bit of careful manoeuvering to get the lights and the props just right, and to position my camera in exactly the right spot, while also avoiding some of the 'clutter' that would detract from the image.

I switched to a wide lens for the landlady because I found myself in a very tight space, yet wanting to frame the subject carefully between The Grand and Winter Gardens in the background. I also wanted to create the feeling of this larger-than-life character being close to the lens, creating distance from the 'buildings' behind her.

I am quite pleased with the results, and I love these opportunities to get creative at work

I've had such an exciting week on the Steadicam Silver workshop, learning how to build, balance, and safely operate different types of steadicam rigs during a very intensive three-day course.

Using a steadicam is very physically demanding (carrying between 8 - 15kg of kit and trying to make it look effortless), as well as being technically challenging, on top of having to consider the aesthetics of making the shot look good.

I have absolutely loved the whole experience, and have come away feeling incredibly confident about incorporating steadicam into my video work (and hopefully lead to more opportunities on set and/or at events).

I'm constantly trying to improve my technical skills behind the camera, as this empowers me to tell more meaningful visual stories with purpose. Having bought a budget version of a steadicam earlier this year, I wanted to learn how to use this advanced piece of kit safely and correctly, and to get into good operating habits to help me achieve mind-blowing footage that will get my work noticed for the right reasons.

I can't wait to put my new skills into practice, and I'm determined to get good at this steadicamming stuff because I've already decided I love it!

A good start to the week getting a double page spread in today's Lancashire Post and Blackpool Gazette with this from my photoshoot at .

Good photographs don't just magically happen, and I always put a lot of thought and planning into a shoot to create an image that tells a story. I directed the dog handler so she could do what she needed to encourage Kiki to go on the equipment at the right pace, and facing in the right direction.

The sun was behind Kiki for this shot - something I had been trying to avoid throughout the session. But in the end, I felt that this angle really showed off the play park the best as the climbing frame gave the model a bit of height and stature, while showcasing all of the awesomely fun agility equipment to its fullest.

I loved the playful interaction between Kiki and her pal, Frisco, who I framed peeking over the plank!

For the nerds: I used a fast shutter speed to freeze the action and a wide aperture to create depth, and as I was using a 24-70mm lens I shot at 24mm to get as much of the background in as possible. I also increased the brightness on the dogs' faces in Lightroom, to combat the issues of shooting into the sun.
