Ten years ago today I took this photo. It marks the moment I fell in love with the Outer Hebrides.

We stayed on Great Bernera on the Isle of Lewis and B***a was the first beach I stepped foot on. My dog Tali, who was still under a year old, ran the length of the beach on the scent of some rabbits. Now she’s nearly 11 and still loves to run on Hebridean sand with her little webbed feet.

Little did I know how special these islands would become to me. That I would get married here. That I would spend months exploring the shorelines. You never know when you’re going to fall deeply in love with a place, and I’m so grateful that I took that ferry.

I thought I would share this photo because it is so typical of the Outer Hebrides; moody skies, turquoise water and copious amounts of gneiss rock💙💙

Elgol. At the end of a long winding road, it reveals itself like a long kept secret. Full of magic and a quiet reverence on a late winter afternoon, it had no business being this serene and still. Meandering from rock to rock, it felt special to watch the sun descend. As the afternoon idled towards sunset, I found myself sticking with this set of rocks, inviting a composition. The tide slowly rose, consuming once visible boulders. The lower the light, the colder the air, the warmer the hues. I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did capturing it 🫶🏻

Something soft. A serene morning at Spittal. I went for the rocks but what I got was the Haar. Fog rolled in, and the lighthouse became a thinly veined mirage beneath the mist. A beautiful moment in an unexpected location.

Just a silly little video of me obsessing about reflections on the canal. I have hundreds of these photos…

Good evening Team!

Posting another photo in an attempt to resist Al imagery taking over your timeline. As ever, without your support it would just be me shouting into the void.

Winter thus far has been a bit meh here in the UK. In the south it’s been wet and where I’ve been in the north it’s also been miserable, or sunny. Basically weather systems that keep getting stuck and for someone like me who thrives in transient weather that isn’t ideal.

We did have a few moments of actual winter back in December and I was in the right place to capture it for once. Hoar frost covered trees at Elterwater in the Lake District. My kind of weather!

A year ago today. Lenticular clouds over Scarista on the Isle of Harris. I think photographers talk big about ‘once in a lifetime’ conditions but honestly this fits the bill. The clouds stuck around for the entire evening, growing ever more pink as the sunset. The perfect companion to the trademark Hebridean blue sea.

I’ll be back on Harris in a week. A short visit this time but I’ll make the most of it, whatever the weather.

Till next time…

Nature vs man made. It’s nice when they not only co-exist in an image, but when one actively enhances the other. The boat is infinitely more interesting framed by the misty, morning atmosphere in the background and the boat really helps the composition, with the tones of the wood complementing the autumn colours.

This one was taken a while ago but thankfully still have the EXIF data. Shot on my old Canon 5D Mk iii and a 24-70mm f/2.8. Likely had a circular polariser on the front which helped bring out the warm tones and enhance the reflection.

A classic Lake District morning!
