Mike Peters
February 25th 1959 - April 29th 2025.

They say you should never meet your heroes in case you’re disappointed. A few years ago, I met one of mine—Mike Peters from The Alarm—and it couldn’t have been more different.

I took a day off work to see him perform a few songs in-store at HMV in Birmingham. Afterwards, he took the time to give me a hug, shake my hand, sign his new album, and even thank me for taking the day off and coming along. It was one of those rare moments that completely overturns that old cliché.

Walking away feeling genuinely seen and appreciated wasn’t just luck—it spoke volumes about who he was, not only as an artist but as a person.

Over the years, I’ve watched Mike perform with The Alarm, Big Country, and as a solo artist—and every single show has been unforgettable, with him giving absolutely everything on stage.

I’m not dwelling on his far too early passing. Instead, I’m spending today listening to part of the incredible body of work he left behind as I journey from Marrakesh to Casablanca.

Who exactly are Beautiful Crazy?

Fresh onto the scene in 2026, this vibrant new production delivers an authentic, high-energy tribute to one of country music’s biggest global stars, Luke Combs. Fronted by award-winning vocalist Noel Boland and backed by a powerhouse band under the direction of Sarah Jory—renowned as the world’s leading female pedal steel guitarist and a BCMA Hall of Fame inductee—this show sets out to capture the heart and soul of modern country at its very best.

The show kicked off with “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma,” immediately setting the tone for an electric night. The first set rolled on with fan favorites including “When It Rains It Pours,” “Best of Me,” “What You See Is What You Get,” “The Part,” “Beer Can,” “You Found Yours,” “Hurricane,” “Lovin’ On You,” and “Ain’t Far From It,” before closing on an emotional high with “Beautiful Crazy,” as the Lichfield crowd lit up the venue with their phone lights.
Set two burst into life with “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” followed by “Back in the Saddle,” “Doin’ This,” “One Number Away,” “Going, Going, Gone,” “Growing Up,” “Front Door Famous,” “Fast Car,” “The Kind of Love We Make,” “Hannah Ford Road,” and “1, 2 Many.” The night wrapped up with an encore performance of “Where the Wild Things Are.”

Throughout the evening, the crowd sang every word back to the band, many dressed in cowboy hats and Luke Combs’ signature baseball caps, creating an atmosphere that felt as much like a celebration as it did a concert.

The standing ovation began before the final notes had faded and continued long after the band left the stage — a truly special night in Lichfield.

The Music of Prince - The Candlelight Concert
Lichfield Cathedral
Thursday 16 April, 2026

Bathed in the soft glow of candlelight, Lichfield Cathedral was transformed into an atmosphere of reverent intimacy, hosting an unforgettable evening celebrating the music of Prince. Soaring Gothic arches and intricate stained glass created a breathtaking backdrop, elevating the entire experience.

A dynamic eight-piece band, featuring four exceptional vocalists, reimagined Prince’s legendary sound. Blending rock, funk, and soul, they deliver a performance perfectly suited to such a magnificent setting.

With powerful vocals and superb musicianship, the band delivered a set packed with iconic favourites—opening with 1999 and closing on the transcendent Purple Rain. In between came a relentless run of classics including Raspberry Beret, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, You Got the Look, Little Red Corvette, Sign o’ the Times, When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, Diamonds and Pearls, Nothing Compares 2 U, Kiss, Play That Funky Music, and more. Each track blended seamlessly into the next, creating a flawless, high-energy performance where every song landed.

As the final notes faded, the evening offered a rare opportunity to experience Prince’s music in a completely new light within a truly unique venue. The audience responded with unrestrained energy, immersed from the very first note—an electrifying celebration of an artist whose music continues to resonate across generations.

Today’s Throwback Thursday at The Robin 🎸

Looking back on a brilliant night with UFO and Michael Schenker tribute band Rock Bottom —keeping the spirit of ’70s and ’80s rock alive. 🤘

Rock Bottom, formed in 2012, are a UK-based tribute band celebrating the music of UFO and Michael Schenker. Featuring Liam Evans, Mark Birdsall, Neil “Fozzy” Foster, Geoff Potts and Phil Rusling, they recreate the band’s classic late ’70s/early ’80s sound—especially fitting as UFO embark on their farewell tour.

The set opens strongly with “Natural Thing” and “Out in the Street,” highlighting the signature guitar-keyboard blend, before “Only You Can Rock Me,” “I’m a Loser” and “Let It Roll” keep the momentum varied and engaging. A heartfelt “Love to Love” leads into a Michael Schenker Group mini-set, including “Into the Arena” and “Desert Song,” which proves just as popular.

Back in UFO territory, “Doctor Doctor,” “Lights Out” and “Rock Bottom” energise the crowd, the latter extended for impressive solos. Closing numbers “Cherry,” “Too Hot to Handle” and “Shoot Shoot” wrap up a night of classic rock on a high. - Words by Jay Bee

One Wild Night In Bilston

With the UK suddenly awash with Bon Jovi tribute acts, it’s fair to ask where Bon Giovi fit into an increasingly crowded field. The answer becomes clear almost immediately: far from being just another contender, they stand as an established benchmark against which the rest are measured, a reputation built on more than two decades on the road since 1999.

Meet the band -
Jaxon Layne (Jon Bon Jovi)
Dean Harris (Richie Sambora)
Wayne Harris (David Bryan)
James Wright (Tico Torres)
Lee Francis (Hugh McDonald)

The West Midlands crowd turned out in impressive numbers, a predominantly standing audience had already gathered tightly around the front, building a sense of anticipation.

As the band took to the stage, the Robin faithful wasted no time in showing their appreciation. Opening with Raise Your Hands, what followed was a relentless run of hits—classic after classic delivered with confidence and energy that immediately set the tone for the night.

“Drawing from a setlist packed with era-defining anthems—You Give Love A Bad Name, Livin’ on a Prayer, Bad Medicine,Wanted Dead or Alive, Always, Bed Of Roses, Blaze Of Glory, Faith, It’s My Life,—Bon Giovi leave little room for anything but nostalgia at full volume.”

In Jaxon Layne they have both the look and sound of the stalwart frontman, but this is far from a one-man show. The rest of the band match him every step of the way: Dean Harris fires off razor-sharp licks, Wayne Harris adds flourish on the keys, Lee Francis underpins it all with driving basslines, and James Wright brings both precision and showmanship from behind the kit.

The Robin crowd lapped it up from the outset, turning the room into something closer to a full-blown arena than an intimate venue. Every chorus was met with a sea of raised hands and voices, the singalongs growing louder as the night went on. By the time the biggest anthems rolled around, the audience were fully invested—on their feet, dancing, and belting out every word as if it were their own show.

Hailing from Leicester, the band made the short trip from the East Midlands to open for Bon Giovi. It was encouraging to see such a strong early turnout, with a sizeable crowd arriving in time to catch their brief set of original material.

Their brand of Indie Rock was warmly received by the West Midlands crowd, who responded enthusiastically throughout the set.

Fazed had 8 tracks to make an impression tonight — kicking things off with Cover My Soul and One More Night, powering through Suffocate, Letting Go, and Dead Of The Night, then closing strong with Open Up, Breath, and Me Against The World.

Solid set — hopefully a few in the crowd dive deeper into their music after that.

Remode - The Music Of Depeche Mode
Robin 2 Bilston
22/08/2019

Throwback Thursday turns back the clock to 2019, revisiting a night steeped in nostalgia and pulsating synth-driven energy courtesy of German Depeche Mode tribute act Remode.

With Daniel Dötsch (Vocals), Michael A. Austin (Keyboards and Vocals), Johannes Makowski (Guitars), Lorenz Alich (Bass) and Vic Chains (Drums) really are the real deal.

It is testament to the band’s performance that their second show in this two-date stopover in England, even on the ‘home turf’ of Basildon, will need to be exceptional to top the reaction of the Robin faithful to this red-letter day for this most iconic of venues - as noted by Jay Bee

The set list that night included -
Black Celebration, Policy Of Truth, World In My Eyes, It’s No Good, Precious, Strangelove, It’s Called a Heart, People Are People, Everything Counts, Personal Jesus, New Life, Photographic, Never Let Me Down Again, Just Can’t Get Enough and Enjoy The Silence.

At Shooting Sounds UK, I’ve experienced countless tribute acts—but Remode truly stood among the very best in their field.

The West Coast Eagles
Eleven - Stoke On Trent
05/04/2026

Hidden away on an industrial estate in Stoke-on-Trent, Eleven is a live music venue known locally as a go-to spot for rock, indie, and tribute acts, hosting gigs most weeks.

I’m here on Easter Sunday afternoon to catch The West Coast Eagles, a Midlands-based tribute act dedicated to recreating the sound and spirit of The Eagles.

This afternoon, the venue holds up to 350 people, and while it may not be completely full, it’s definitely close.

Following an intro of Silver Dagger, the band launched into a well-paced journey through the music of the Eagles. Classics like Take It Easy, Lyin’ Eyes, and Witchy Woman captured their signature West Coast sound, while later additions such as The Boys of Summer, Take It To The Limit and Life’s Been Good brought variety and energy.

The set built confidently toward standout moments including Hotel California, Dirty Laundry, One Of These Nights and Heartache Tonight, before closing with a beautifully understated encore of Desperado. A tight, nostalgic tribute that balanced hits with heart.

Meet the Band
Dave Thompson – Acoustic Guitar, Vocals
Terry Hill – Electric Guitar, Vocals
Paul “Gibbo” Gibbons – Bass Guitar, Vocals
Roy Lord – Keyboards, Vocals
Harvey Eggington – Drums, Percussion

Together, they formed a cohesive, musically accomplished unit that did justice to a legendary catalogue. The audience in Stoke-on-Trent turned out in great numbers and showed their appreciation with a warm, enthusiastic response at the close.

Calling Planet Earth
Lichfield Garrick Theatre
04/04/2026

The Lichfield Garrick Theatre, a modern regional venue and a cornerstone of the city’s cultural scene, provides the perfect setting tonight for Calling Planet Earth, a New Wave, New Romantic and Synth Pop tribute band.

As the audience arrives—many dressed in 1980s-inspired outfits—they take their seats early, buzzing with anticipation for the 7:30 start.

Suddenly, the house lights dim. The band strides onto a purple-lit stage to a wave of whoops, whistles, and cheers from the Lichfield crowd—then, without hesitation, they launch into Cars by Gary Numan. This sets the scene for an evening of 80s anthems—synth-driven, high-energy, and packed with nostalgia.

Their electrifying performance transports the audience straight back to the decade’s golden era, celebrating an iconic catalogue of music from artists such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, The Human League, Depeche Mode, Culture Club, Ultravox, Japan, ABC, Tears for Fears, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Eurythmics and Soft Cell. The result is a vibrant, high-energy show that resonates just as strongly with devoted fans as it does with newcomers.

Calling Planet Earth are an exceptional live act, masterfully capturing the essence of the 1980s. Their seamless fusion of lush synth textures and dynamic guitar work, combined with powerful, polished vocals, delivers an authentic and electrifying tribute to the era’s most iconic sounds.

As for the audience, they more than played their part—singing these much-loved tracks back at the band with gusto, before ending the night on their feet, dancing in the aisles to the final beats.

If you enjoy my content, I’d truly appreciate a like and a follow — every bit of support means the world. Thank you so much!
