Gateshead Millennium Bridge

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne between Gateshead arts quarter on the south bank and Newcastle upon Tyne's Quayside area on the north bank. It was the first tilting bridge ever to be constructed.[1] Opened for public use in 2001, the award-winning[2] structure was conceived and designed by architectural practice WilkinsonEyre and structural engineering firm Gifford.[3] The bridge is sometimes called the 'Blinking Eye Bridge'[4] or the 'Winking Eye Bridge'[5] due to its shape and its tilting method. The Millennium Bridge stands as the twentieth tallest structure in the city, and is shorter in stature than the neighbouring Tyne Bridge.

Standing stones above the valley

Two weathered standing stones set into a dry-stone wall, lichen-patched and solid, with a whole valley laid out between them. The fields below run all the way to the hills on the far side, the sky laced with high cirrus and full of light. Getting up to a spot like this on a clear day, with a view that stretches that far, makes the walk worth it every time.

Industrial tower, night light trails

The industrial tower dominates the background, lit up in blue and purple against a completely black sky. In the foreground a speed warning sign reads 'Watch Your Speed, Police Checks', and the road is painted with long red and white light trails from passing traffic. Long enough exposure to pull those trails right across the frame. The sign and the structure make for an odd pairing, the everyday warning sitting in front of something that looks more like a film set than a roadside.

The Spire Bridge by night

Shot from the centre of the bridge deck looking straight up toward the main pylon, the stay cables catching the red and blue lighting in sharp lines against a black sky. Light trails from passing traffic run the full length of the road surface, the long exposure pulling them into clean streaks from the foreground all the way to the vanishing point. The star bursts on the street lamps tell you the aperture was well stopped down. One of those spots that rewards being out late when the road goes quiet enough to let the shot breathe.

Tiger, straight down the lens

Chester Zoo, and this one was not bothered about being watched. Full eye contact, close enough to pick out the individual whiskers and the pale fur around the muzzle. The rock face behind goes completely soft so there's nothing competing with the face. Getting a frame this clean with the eyes this sharp takes the animal doing you a favour, and this one held the stare long enough.

Tigers at Chester Zoo, at ease

Two tigers down in the grass in front of a stand of bamboo, completely unbothered. One is flat on its back, eyes shut, paws up — the other is sitting upright, tongue out, looking straight at the camera. Getting both animals relaxed and close enough for the face detail to come through clearly takes some patience, and a bit of luck that one of them decides to look your way at the right moment.

Apache on the apron, Teesside

Sitting on the apron at Teesside Airport under a heavy grey sky, this Apache is loaded up and facing square at the camera, every weapons mount and sensor cluster visible up front. The disc radar above the rotor head and the nose-mounted gun give you the full picture of what this machine is built for. Not a lot of aircraft fill a frame quite like an Apache head-on, and the overcast kept the light flat enough to hold all that dark olive detail without blowing anything out.
