Andrew Chandler Photography

Andrew Chandler Photography Andrew Chandler I love the fact that photography is both art and science.

I’ve worked in and around Hull and East Yorkshire for many years, offering a range of photographic services that include weddings, portraiture and general commercial work, as well as landscape and travel photography. Whilst my base near Beverley means that I usually operate in and around the Yorkshire region, I am happy to work further afield in the UK and abroad. From my early attempts to capture

images as a child with my first camera, through spending countless hours in a darkroom developing black and white prints while studying at university, to the present day – photography has always fascinated me. Despite advances in digital photography and the ability to automate so many camera functions, it’s still about trying to communicate a moment in time – ensuring good composition and paying attention to detail – all before the shutter is released.

I just love this time of the year - fresh new leaves contrasting with the trees’ dark trunks.

Finally ... it's out there! After nine months, mostly during the last lockdown, I’ve finished my ‘Zero to Zero’ book and it's available for sale. The original idea was to produce a coffee table photo book with essentially the same images that appeared in my two exhibitions a couple of years ago; one in East Yorkshire and the other in Greenwich, London. These images would be accompanied by captions describing something of the story behind each photograph and basic camera settings. As time went by, I began to realise that I needed to include more images to describe what had become a photographic odyssey as I made my way around the world.

Approaching nearly 300 pages and now illustrated with over 400 photographs, the book is a comprehensive record of my global journey and hopefully of interest to anyone keen on travel photography – available as hardback and paperback versions in my online shop and now also on Amazon.

Once again I’m reminded to never give up on the light when I’m out and about - this time with my iPhone whilst strolling along the Thames path, Charlton Riverside. It had looked like the fog was here to stay and then suddenly it lifted, the clouds broke briefly in the west as the sun set and worked its magic on the almost mirror-still Thames.

Flew into Kerry in a storm. The coastal landscapes and skies on the Di**le Peninsula have been spectacular, but I just can’t resist the abandoned buildings along Ireland’s ‘Wild Atlantic Way’. Especially since they offer respite from the gale force winds.

Just two full days staying in Whitby and the weather’s bright and sunny. In fact, too bright for my liking as the sky is now very boring. Nevertheless, it’s my only chance, especially with the tides times as they are, to do some photography. After a visit to the abbey yesterday, today it’s a case of scrambling across the rocks at Saltwick Bay before sunset to capture the wreckage of the Admiral Von Tromp....in 45mph winds!

The end of another terrific week in Abruzzo. The weather's been ideal for combining both photography and a holiday for my clients in what is still a relatively undiscovered part of Italy. I've a couple of days off and then we do it all over again ... can't wait!

What a week in France, once again! As well as some macrophotography, I was lucky enough to take in the Tour de France and also witness the spectacular firework display at Carcassonne, commemorating Bastille Day.

The weather (in the mid 30s Celsius every day) couldn’t have been more of a contrast to my last visit, which consisted of strong, cool Mistral winds, mitigating against any kind of outdoor macro photography.

This time, the challenge was the heatwave and even getting up early still meant there was little or no chance of any dew and the insects would be active almost as soon as it was light. Luckily my 100-400mm lens came to the rescue on a number of occasions, when it became impossible to get in close with a dedicated macro lens.

The main reason for being in France, Revel in the Languedoc, was to set up an exhibition of some of my work taken over the last few years whilst running my photographic holidays. In the space of a morning, all the framed pictures were up on the wall at Agout’The´, a salon that’s ideally positioned in Revel’s central square and so with time on my hands, I could indulge myself during some welcome fine weather – well overdue.

Images from the first stage of the mens' 2019 Tour de Yorkshire, taken about 500 metres from the summit of Baggaby Hill, just outside Warter in East Yorkshire. The weather, a stark contrast to last year’s Mediterranean temperatures, played its part in preventing the peloton from catching the breakaway group, which included the eventual stage winner, Dutch rider, Jesper Asselman. Mark Cavendish finished eighth.
