Yesterday's installation of the Galamsey photographic exhibition at Belfast Exposed Gallery.

Galamsey is a long-term documentary project by our studio manager, Mariusz Śmiejek, exploring the human and environmental consequences of illegal gold mining in Ghana.

The exhibition was printed and produced at 1G1 Studio supported by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.

The photobook was produced and self-published by Mariusz, with support from Arts Council Northern Ireland and . This year, it received First Place awards in professional photography competitions in Paris, France, and Budapest, Hungary, as well as an Honorable Mention in the USA.

The photographs will be on display at Belfast Exposed Photography until 19 December.

Join Mariusz this Thursday at 6 pm during Late Night Art to hear more about the project and the stories behind the photographs.

JOSEPH “KING KONG” AGBEKO — A STORY BEYOND THE RING

An intimate conversation with Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko, former Four-Time World Bantamweight Champion and one of Ghana’s most accomplished boxers.

A former IBF, WBF and IBO World Bantamweight Champion, Agbeko grew up in Accra and became one of thousands of young people whose lives were touched by The Street Academy — a school providing education, support and opportunity to children and young people from some of Accra’s most disadvantaged communities.

In this conversation, Agbeko reflects on his journey, his beginnings, boxing, and the role that education and opportunity can play in changing a young person’s life.

Filmed in Accra, Ghana, in collaboration with The Street Academy, a school supporting children from the streets and communities around Jamestown, Agbogbloshie and the Arts Centre.

Founded and led by Ataa Lartey, The Street Academy has provided education, guidance and a safe environment for generations of young people.

This interview was produced by 1G1 Studio Belfast in collaboration with The Street Academy as part of the Between Pictures Project.

Fantastic news from Paris! 🇫🇷

Galamsey the photography book by Mariusz Śmiejek founder and manager of our 1G1 Studio, has won 1st Place in the Professional Book/Documentary category at PX3 – Prix de la Photographie Paris.

This is a major recognition for a long-term documentary project that has been developed over several years through Mariusz’s continued work in Ghana.

It also follows another recent international recognition for the book in the USA, making this a very exciting moment for the project.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to and supported Galamsey — from the communities and people who shared their stories, to everyone involved in the editing, writing, design, printing and production of the book.

The book is now available to order through Mariusz’s website.

And we’re looking forward to bringing the project to Belfast: the Galamsey exhibition and book launch will take place at Belfast Exposed this November.

Photographing the Indian Men’s National Cricket Team during their visit to Belfast was a real privilege.

Commissioned by the Consulate General of India in Belfast, we had the opportunity to document a special reception celebrating the team’s T20I series against Ireland at Stormont. It was an evening that brought together sport, diplomacy, and the Indian community in Northern Ireland.

Thank you to the Consulate General of India, the Indian Men’s Cricket Team, and everyone involved for the opportunity to document this memorable event.

I am very pleased to announce that the production of my second photobook, “Galamsey,” is now approaching completion.

This is a self-published project and a major undertaking — the result of many years of work, commitment, and the support of extraordinary people who believed this story deserved to exist in the form of a photobook.

I am deeply grateful to Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The National Lottery, as well as to all private supporters who made seven years of work in Ghana possible.

The book includes a selection of photographs edited by Tomasz Tomaszewski, a introduction by principal investigator Melani Mennella, and an foreword by photographer and filmmaker Ed Kashi.

The production of this limited edition requires significant resources, which is why I am opening a pre-order campaign to help complete the final stage of publication.

First copies will ship in July
