On our recent trip to France ๐ซ๐ท located 2km South of in the -de-France Region you will find the crash site. Its a 5 min walk from Chem. des Coutumes.
Why is this significant?.
The R101 was an airship built in the Shed No..1
The shed itself was raised 35ft and lengthened to 812ft just to house and build R101; No.2 Shed arrived later for its sister, the R100.
Now nearly a century on, the 5th October 1930 crash was survived by 6, but tragically killed 48 people. It also killed Britainโs Imperial Scheme, and halted all airship construction at Cardington .
R100 development was scrapped inside shed No2 and Royal Airship Works closed, and the giant hangars lost their reason for existing.
For over a year, the R100 remained in its hangar at Cardington whilst the fate of the Imperial Airship programme was decided.
The R100 was moved to Shed 1 then In December 1931, it was broken up and sold for scrap
Freed from airship duty, both sheds have survived to become iconic landmarks which can be seen accross โlater used for storage, barrage balloons, aircraft testing, film sets, and now heritage sites.
The R101 made the sheds what they are; its crash decided what they became.
To those that lost their lives. This monument stands forever. ๐ซถ๐
These very recent aerial photos show how the area is being beautifully preserved with a recent cut grass walkway and new paint. ๐
There is also a plaque in the Palace of Westminster commemorating the crash.
