Chroma Camera

Chroma Camera Chroma Cameras are the newest, and most unique, large format field cameras available today.

I created Everyday-Photographics as a result of my passion for photography and also as an antidote to the numerous hidden cost photographers on the High Street today. Many photographers utilise the 'cheap sitting fee' model to get people through the door before sharing the actual costs of prints afterwards by which time people have already decided that they want the photographs. Instead of this, I

offer clear and open packages so you know what you will come away with. As well as portraits, I also really enjoy covering weddings because it's amazing how many different emotions can be seen on one day. As a photographer, real emotions make every image come alive and I always aim to deliver this feeling within my photographs. Whilst delivering my own style of photography, I also offer a unique service in that I shoot with both digital cameras and traditional medium format film. Whilst digital has its' place, seeing a roll of slide film looks like a string of stained glass windows which can't be beaten. If you're interested in this, please get in touch and I'm happy to share some examples. Please take a look at my galleries and get in touch if you have any questions.

Firstly, apologies to anyone that has emailed or messaged me in the last week if I haven’t yet replied to you. Since being at PhotoGraphica 2 weeks ago, Chroma Towers has been non-stop. As a small business I’m always massively grateful for support, and enjoy building everyone’s new camera/accessories but I often realise that there are in fact only 24 hours in a day, and I’m spending at least 12 of those in the workshop :0)

To give a flavour of the selection of kit that has headed out across the world over the last 2 weeks, I wanted to share some details;

1. First up was the black Six17 with Schneider 180/5.6 technical cone that headed to Finland.
2. Next up was Thorsten’s matte black Six9 that’s now in Germany.
3. I’m not sure what the collective noun for a group of LomoGraflok adaptors is (a “Legion”? 🙂) but six of those have gone out across the world.
4. This custom matte black Six6 with cone for a superwide Schneider 38XL is officially the widest Six6 I’ve built so far.
5. The bright orange Six17 with Fujinon 90/8 cone is heading to Michigan, have fun Erik 👍🏻
6. The black SnapShot with Schneider 135/5.6 cone stayed here in the UK.
7. The first olive green Six7 I’ve built is close to Chroma Towers here in the UK.
8. The first orange Six7 Colourway film back and matching black setup is crossing the Atlantic
9. The all black Six7 is also here in the UK
10. Finally, the black Six17 with extended grip is on the way to France and the blue Six17 with similarly extended grip is winging its’ way to Austria.

7 years ago when I first started Chroma as my new, and quite daunting, business I had no idea that I would be building cameras for photographers all over the world and seeing so many different landscapes, cities, portraits and abstract work shared by people using cameras that I’ve personally designed and built. It’s an amazing feeling!

Cheers
Steve

It’s been a long time coming but my new multi-format camera system is now available to order from my website!

Available with a range of lenses choices, including pinhole, large format, Mamiya Press and Holga to create the most flexible 6x7 camera system available. As well as 6x7, the camera comes with 4 other format masks to allow you to shoot 6x6, 6x3 medium format and Xpan format 35mm in the same compact system.

I’ve also just uploaded user guides to my YouTube channel (link in my bio) showing an overview of the Six7, loading 120 film, loading 35mm film and using a range of lenses with the ground glass for accurate focus/composition.

If you’ve been waiting to order your own Six7, head to my website now. If you don’t have a lens yet, check out my “Stock” section where I’ve still got 4 Six7 cameras ready for immediate shipping with a choice of lenses including the Mamiya Press 50mm, Holga 60mm and a 0.2mm pinhole.

Cheers
Steve

After catching up with Peter from at the Photography Show earlier this year he told me about his new 4x5 sheet film and agreed to send me some to test out.

Of course, it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t use that opportunity to try out the new to me sheet film (in both 400 and 200), in a work-in-progress sheet film holder system, in a work-in-progress compact camera and then develop those sheets in a work-in-progress compact development tank 😂

As much as I’ve apologised to Peter for the frankly awful outcome from the work-in-progress setup, the actual tonality, contrast and sharpness from his new film is right up my street, even with the ‘unique’ results! These were all handheld, F22 at 1/60th with my Schneider 65mm f8 in overcast light and developed in Pyro510.

I’m going to load some more sheets into my SnapShot and shoot some better images in my production setup next so will share those next week.

Ok, Chroma Towers (mobile) is all setup at table 56 and ready for the next 8 hours of talking cameras! I’m next to and have a selection of DoubleGlass lenses, Click cameras, 6x17 Graflok setups and my brand new Six7 cameras in 5 different setups ready to take away today. Yeah, it’s been a veeery long day in Chroma Towers!

Thanks to my son, Jake, working hard alongside me we’ve managed to get 5 sets of 6x17 Graflok setups built (including my brand new ground glass protectors) and these funky camera setups with matching MagSafe mounts, ready for in London on Sunday. I’ve also got the last two cameras I’ve built for sale, as well as a batch of lenses.

I’ve also got my own with 90mm f5.6 and matching 6x12 film back, as well as my SnapShot and InstantWide setups if you’re looking to try any of them out for yourself. I won’t have these for sale to take away on the day but I’ll be happy to take orders for your custom setups so I can get back into the workshop on Monday and start building.

Now I need some sleep, see you in London 👍🏻

Only 3 days to go until on Sunday 17th May at The Royal National Hotel in London. I’ll be there with a table, alongside the man himself Mr Dowling with his always unique goodies, including his brand new “Direktor” film.

I’ve got a busy day in the workshop tomorrow getting the last of my stock built up so will have the following kit with me available to take away on Sunday;

5 x Complete 6x17 Graflok Setups @ £295
46 x Double Glass lenses @ £99
2 x Click 35mm cameras @ £125

and…

5 x Six7 camera full setups:

2 pinhole versions
1 Holga 60/8 version
1 Schneider 90/6.8 version
1 Mamiya Press setup with the fantastic 50/6.3 lens.

Alongside the stock for sale I’m also bringing some of my own cameras so you can try them out before ordering your own on the day or afterwards via my website.

The cameras I’ll be bringing are;

- Snapshot 4x5 with Schneider 65/8 lens
- Six17 with Schneider 90/8 lens
- Six12 with Schneider 90/6.8 lens
- Six9 with Radionar 90/2.9 lens
- InstantWide with Schneider 47/5.6 lens
- 4x5 Compact EasyLoad System

Now I’ve written that down I realise it’s a lot of kit to pack and load into my car so I’m definitely going to be busy on Saturday morning too!

See you there. Cheers, Steve

New product alert! (link in my bio)

This is a lightweight clip-on hard plastic ground glass protector and popup shade in one unit.

When folded flat, the protector can be left in place on the ground glass to prevent any scratches/damage. When the ground glass is used, the top plate is hinged upwards and the two side plates hinge outwards and lock in place.

Available for Six17, Six12, Six9 and Six6 cameras. Total weight is only 74g.

I had a bit of free time this week so decided to design a modern take on the humble Matchbox pinhole camera, with the aim of keeping it as compact as possible whilst maintaining film flatness and ease of use.

After creating a pile of test parts and redesigns I ended up with this, weighing 97g with film loaded, 15mm ‘focal length’ and a 0.2mm pinhole, giving an effective aperture of F75 and integrated tripod mount. The winding k***s fit into the film canisters first then lock in place for rotation when fitted into the camera body.

The shutter is a simple 45 degree rotating plate that locks in open/closed position with friction. The main shutter box is removable, making it easy to pass the film through the film path rebate and then wind it on into an empty film canister on the take up side (I’ve got reloadable cassettes coming so I can run a film through soon).

I don’t have an actual plan for this camera, it was more of a thought/design experiment, but I’m looking forward to putting the first roll through it to identify any issues and finalise it. Although, I’m pretty sure I could also integrate my Double Glass optics and shutter from the Click camera into a separate removable lens box 🤔
