Looking for patterns in the black sand on Skye.

Volcanoes shaped the land here causing knife edge ridges and charcoal beaches, just like Iceland. A period of settled weather improves the water clarity to show the seabed and a low autumn sun makes the turquoise colours pop!

A shot now 13 years old, I still love this one even if it’s not perfect photographically.

I would have been living in the north of England, years before working in conservation and getting a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities surrounding deer in the Highlands and a few years before training as a mountain leader.

This would have been around 6AM making the climb up to the South Glen Shiel Ridge turning into a big day where the mountains were in full winter condition from the first bealach. Finished with an unpleasant 2 hour bouldery descent in the dark with only one working head torch between as we extended the route to squeeze in 9 Munros out of the day.

Lots of lessons learnt and thankful for more modern battery packs these days!

MIUT: Chao das Feiteiras to Machico

Fastpacking the Madeira Island Ultra Trail over 4 days. 115 kilometers from Porto Moniz to Machico, visiting some the island’s tallest peaks along the way. 7000 meters of elevation gain through some of Madeira’s most beautiful regions.

Day 4/4

Some of the best trail was saved til last! After a sunrise pack down, we were soon on a levada/aqueduct, snaking slowly down from 1500m to sea level, where open mountain and dense forest gave way to an exposed cliff side for several km.

Awesome underfoot all day apart from an initial 2 km descent of bramble hell.

Happy/tired at the finish and just enough energy for a swim in the sea!
