Glorious winter sunshine, the first time in what felt like an eternity and the snowdrops garden at .farm was looking glorious!

This beautiful Arts and Crafts style garden perfectly placed on the edge of an open landscape contained many rooms of delight. From the neatly presented terrace, with triangular beds of fascinating Galanthus varieties to the intriguing hidden areas, enticing visitors inside with scents of Daphne and Sarcococca - such heady aromas šŸ˜
At the boundary, a Bog Garden full of anticipation for the new season and a gentle stream bubbling through links to an open paddock and orchard offering a wonderful place to sit and pause and drink in spectacular valley views.

Open on special occasions and in conjunction with the gardens are well worth seeking out for late winter wanderings and the promise of a new season to follow.

Very much looking forward to seeing the garden in full bloom this summer!

Newark Park is one of the best smaller historic properties cared for by the National Trust - and it’s a pure joy to photograph. January is made for winter walks and every year it’s become a tradition to visit this beautiful place, to enjoy the brisk air and absorb the tranquil setting - where the views are incredible across the Ozleworth valley below. It’s also the place where I always spot the first snowdrops - must be the perfect micro climate and positioning here that brings these delightful blooms into sight.

A landscape as frozen in time as the gothic mansion that occupies it. Woodchester is an enchanting place to explore, a mysterious story of a house that was never finished, located deep in a wooded valley that barely sees the winter sun.

It’s a curious tale of why it was built here in the first place, perhaps the sense of isolation and the remoteness appealed. Something I can certainly identify with, but would have to hike to the hills above to catch some rays of light.

From outside, the Victorian facade, designed by Benjamin Bucknall appears complete, but internally it is an empty shell - no floors, plastering, doors or details exist other than the bare architectural bones on display. A perfect educational resource and ideal for those interested in learning historical construction methods.

These mighty beech trees live out their life in one of the most exposed and windy sites in Wiltshire. I’m so surprised they manage to withstand such testing conditions but year after year they endure the worst and look magnificent for doing so, their leaves just about clinging on despite the autumnal fronts sweeping through.

Roaming under the grandest veteran trees is a humbling experience. The silent sentinel, witness to hundreds of years of landscape change and the musings of intrepid passers by, stopping to rest beneath vast reaching limbs, skywards and sturdy, offering safe canopy and boughs of beauty.

Looking for a place of calm and reflection, and of course some lovely golden light led me to the beautiful St Alshelm’s Chapel on the Purbeck coast.

This 12th Century Norman chapel is believed to form part of a monastic settlement, unusual to this part of Britain. Although quite plain in appearance it’s the dramatic setting and feeling of isolation which is a delight (apart from next door there is a coastwatch station and a row of cottages on the approach). Once beside this peculiar, square and squat building it feels very remote, and the wind? Blimey - it’s strong and presumably why the chapel has this hunkered down, low profile.

Inside the wind is a faint memory as the solid, thick walls shelter from the elements perfectly. Adorning the walls that catch the light in an otherwise gloomy space are some wonderful 17th century graffiti on pillars holding up a medieval vaulted roof.

šŸ“· Composing these shots was brief, a window of light in the letterbox slot between land and thick cloud gave just a 5 minute show off gold. As the light faded venturing inside was a welcome retreat from the relentless wind.

Wisteria wonderland! It’s been a fantastic year for these incredible blooms and there’s something so special about a Wiltshire red brick house draped in sweetly scented pale purple flowers.

The glorious gardens at Seend House were the perfect start to the growing season, beautiful topiary box hedges containing drifts of white tulips aplenty. There’s such an air of anticipation visiting and photographing places like this, fresh vibrant emergent growth hinting at the bounty of blooms to come.

Opened as part of the event in partnership with - look out for another gathering this September and a multi garden open weekend in Seend this June.
