Aurora season is just around the corner, and honestly, there’s no place I’d rather be than Iceland. If you’re thinking of heading there this autumn, here are my 10 top tips to make the most of your trip;
1. Pack Smart: Layer Up! 🧤
Waterproof Outerwear:
A waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers are essential to combat the wet weather and wind.
Insulating Layers:
Wear thermal base layers, a warm fleece or wool sweater, and warm socks.
Accessories:
Don’t forget a warm hat that covers your ears, waterproof gloves, and a scarf.
Waterproof Boots
2. Chase the Northern Lights 🌌
Autumn is an excellent time for Northern Lights viewing, as the darker evenings provide better opportunities.
3. Explore the Golden Circle 🗺️
Don’t miss the iconic Golden Circle route, featuring Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall.
4. Discover the South Coast 🧭
Take in the stunning landscapes of the South Coast, with famous sites like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls and the Reynisfjara black sand beach.
5. Experience the Sheep Round-Ups 🐑
Participate in the annual sheep round-ups, a traditional event that offers a unique glimpse into Icelandic culture.
6. Book in Advance 📆
Book accommodations and car rentals early, as Iceland is a popular destination, especially during the shoulder seasons.
7. Be Flexible & Check the Weather ❄️
Iceland’s weather is unpredictable. Always check the forecasts on the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s (Vedur.is) website before heading out and be prepared to adjust your plans.
8. Enjoy the Hot Springs 🧖♂️
Bring a swimsuit to visit Iceland’s famous thermal pools and hot springs, which are a perfect way to relax, especially in colder weather.
9. Plan Your Driving 🚙
Be prepared for significant driving to see the sights. Always pull over in a designated parking area to take photos and never stop on the side of the road.
10. Respect Nature 🌿
Iceland’s natural environment is beautiful but fragile. Stay on marked trails, do not drive off-road, and practice leave-no-trace principles.
