Puffins of Skomer Island
Skomer Island, just off the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales, is one of Britain’s most important seabird reserves and a major stronghold for Atlantic puffins.
Record population: A survey announced in April 2026 counted 52,019 puffins on and around Skomer—the island’s highest recorded total and up from 43,626 in 2025. 
Summer visitors: Puffins normally begin arriving in mid-April, remain through May, June and much of July, and have generally left by the end of July. 
Life at sea: They spend most of the autumn and winter dispersed across the North Atlantic, returning to land mainly to breed.
