This weekend, Glasgow came together alongside Free Spanish Hounds and Plataforma NAC to help raise awareness for Spanish hunting dogs.

The peaceful walk took place just before the close of Spain’s hunting season, when galgos, podencos and other hunting dogs are commonly used to chase hares across open fields.

When the season ends on February 1, as many as 100,000 dogs are abandoned or killed each year, many of them having endured severe cruelty throughout their lives.

Panorama of the Three Sisters in Glencoe.
I finally had a chance to try out my new Sony 16mm f/1.8 lens along with the NiSi Jetmag Pro polarising and ND filters — and I have to say, I’m very happy with both! The compact size of the 16mm and the convenience of using smaller magnetic filters will definitely encourage me to use this combo more often. While I’ll miss the 14mm on my Sigma 14-24mm, I think the trade-off in convenience and size is worth it for me, especially since I usually travel to interesting locations on two wheels rather than by car.

Now, some technical info. Can you guess how many photos I actually took to create this panorama?

The answer is 36! I had to take six separate compositions to cover roughly a 180-degree angle. I shot each composition using bracketing (three photos), and for each one, I focused on both the foreground and background to enable focus stacking later.

Once I had all the photos, I started by merging them into HDR in Lightroom, then moved to Photoshop to focus-stack the HDR files, and finally merged them into a panorama.

It actually required a bit of planning — and probably more effort than people imagine. Not to mention a 2.5-hour ride to get to the location and a steep walk down a hill to find the pools. I think it was worth it though!

I'll be joining the peaceful march for the Spanish Hunting Dogs this Saturday in Glasgow. Here's why:

Podencos and Galgos are the two main breeds that are used for hunting in Spain, although others suffer to at the hands of this Spanish tradition. Podencos and Galgos are often referred to as ‘Invisible Dogs’ or ‘The Great Forgotten’. Sadly, they are the most abused dogs in Spain. Bred to hunt and kept in squalid conditions, often chained - these ‘working dogs’ are not protected by Spanish law.

In 2023, there was an overhaul to the Spanish animal rights laws but devastatingly hunting dogs were excluded from these rights as they are viewed as tools and therefore not protected. It can be difficult to imagine the suffering they endure, hidden from view.

At the end of the hunting season, they are dumped, tortured or killed in their thousands. This barbaric practice needs to stop and we encourage you to lend your voice to these dogs.
