A fiery sunset floods Crow Point with deep orange and crimson light, reflecting off the wet sands and calm waters as the sun sinks behind the dunes in a blaze of colour.

The old lighthouse at Crow Point, sometimes called the High Light (paired with a Low Light), was built in the early 19th century (around 1820) to help vessels navigate the dangerous Bideford Bar at the mouth of the Taw-Torridge estuary.
It was a tall wooden octagonal tower set atop a two-storey keeper's house, and its light could be seen up to 14 miles out to sea.
Over the years the structure became unstable (especially after 1945 when keepers were withdrawn), and in 1957 both the High Light and Low Light were demolished.
Today only faint remains are visible — parts of the foundations, scattered masonry, or groynes nearby — giving a hint of the building that once stood there.

Over its long history, Crow Point has served as a vital point for navigation, settlement, and defence. It once hosted a small village and chapel connected with an ancient ferry crossing to Appledore — although the shifting sands mean the exact locations are lost.
To guide shipping into the Taw-Torridge estuary, the area had a large wooden lighthouse (known as Braunton Lighthouse or the "High Light") with keepers, plus a “Low Light” and later leading lights.
The current lighthouse structure was built in 1954, replacing the older towers which were demolished in the late 1950s.
WW2 also left its mark: the American army used Braunton Burrows, including areas near Crow Point, as a key assault training centre ahead of D-Day, leaving behind roads (like the “American Road”), mock landing craft, concrete walls and other artifacts.

Crow Point, near Braunton in North Devon, is a tranquil sand spit where the rivers Taw and Torridge meet the sea. Part of the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it’s known for its vast sandy beaches, shifting dunes, and rich wildlife. Visitors can reach it via Braunton Marshes or the scenic “American Road,” and enjoy sweeping views across the estuary to Instow and Appledore. Remote and unspoiled, Crow Point offers a perfect spot for peaceful walks, photography, and birdwatching.

A cycle to one of my favourite spots. No one else in sight and I was treated to a dramatic colourful sunset. The best I've seen for a while.

The Milky Way is the spiral galaxy that contains our Solar System, a vast collection of stars, planets, gas, and dust bound together by gravity. Seen from Earth, it appears as a hazy band of light arching across the night sky, created by the combined glow of billions of distant stars. Home to around 100–400 billion stars, it stretches about 100,000 light-years across, with our Sun located roughly two-thirds of the way from the centre.

Barricane Beach, near Woolacombe in North Devon, is a small, sheltered cove famous for its golden sand mixed with exotic shells washed in from the Caribbean. Tucked between rocky outcrops, it’s a peaceful contrast to Woolacombe’s wide sandy bay, making it perfect for rock pooling, picnics, and evening walks. The beach is especially loved for its stunning sunsets and the seasonal café that serves authentic Sri Lankan curries, creating a unique and memorable coastal experience.

Is it just me or has there been a severe lack of sunsets recently!?
