It was a privilege to be there and document a day filled with friendship, support, and remembrance. Events like this show the strength of a community coming together to honour someone special and to support an important cause.

📸 Something That May Shock or Discredit You 🌟

I’m so excited (and slightly scundered) to be exhibiting as part of this year’s BA Photography w/ Video degree show, alongside the work of my VERY talented classmates and friends. The exhibition brings together a range of visual projects, each exploring personal, cultural and social stories in their own unique ways.

My final project, A Place of Return, will be shown as part of the exhibition — so if you’re interested in viewing the work in person, why not come down? 😁

The exhibition will be open from Friday 5th June – Saturday 20th June 2026 on the 4th floor of the BA Building, at the Ulster University campus in Belfast.

It would mean so much to see familiar faces there as I close this chapter and celebrate my time at university.

Hey all, I’m Mya Wilkinson, and I’m here to chat a little bit about my final project while studying here at Ulster BSOA.

A Place of Return reflects on the memories, places, and experiences that continue to shape who we become.

The work returns to childhood and adolescence through constructed self-portraiture, archival material, personal locations, and installation, considering how the past can remain present in the body, mind, and self.

Moving through Innocence, Disorder, and Emergence, the project explores comfort, uncertainty, masking, healing, and the process of understanding without always having clear answers.

A little look at a *smidge* of the installation process for ‘A Place of Return’.

This stage felt like one of the biggest shifts in the project, where the work moved from being something I had drawn, edited, stitched, and carried around in pieces — into something that fell into place within the space.

The fabric has become, for me, a really important part of the installation. Not just as context, but as something soft, suspended, and physical. I wanted it to feel personal and slightly fragile, creating a quiet contrast between the official language of the assessment and the emotional weight it holds for me now, which I tried to reflect through the softness of the fabric.

Installing it alongside the framed photographs made the project feel much more complete, and also made me realise how much of this work has been about returning to these things that I didn’t fully understand at the time, and allowing myself to meet them differently now.

Very grateful to my friends for helping me get it up — and for witnessing my unexpected battle with medium heights and my lack of balance…

I never thought in a million years I’d be comfortable enough to be in front of a camera again like this, but here we are! 😅

For a long time, I moved away from it… kept things quieter, more behind the scenes… so it feels a bit strange coming full circle.

Going from being a kid online, constantly creating and sharing, to stepping back on a break… and now returning to it through my work in a completely different way.

I think it’s less about “starting again” and more about returning to something that was always there, just in a different form. I’m so proud little me decided to give it a shot! 🥹

Building a brand from scratch can feel a bit overwhelming. It’s all about how you present yourself and your work to your audience, which makes it such an intentional journey. I’ve truly fallen in love with my branding over the course of creating it, and I hope you will too!

Each part of this post highlights a different aspect of that development: from creating a minimal, future-proof logo and a consistent colour palette rooted in my previous works, to building a portfolio website and biosite that make my creations and contact information easier to find for potential collaborators. I’ve also refreshed my social media presence to reflect this new chapter, plus designed new business cards for upcoming opportunities, like our degree show at the start of June!

For me, it’s about crafting a cohesive identity that ties everything together. So, whether someone discovers my work online, scans a QR code, or meets me in person, I want them to get a clear idea of who I am and the kind of work I’m passionate about.

This journey is still unfolding, but it’s beginning to take shape as a more defined version of my practice.

What’s coming next? Consistency, refinement, and sharing my work with all of you to enjoy! 🤍🥰

editing the final images for my degree project… 🫶🏼

this work is SUPER personal to me… it’s split into three chapters: innocence, disorder, and emergence. each one reflects a different stage of growing up, and how i’ve experienced and understood those moments over time.

it’s not just about how the images look, but how they feel. this project has been my way of processing, reflecting, and being honest with myself through photography.

feels a bit surreal seeing it all come together now.
