The wintery conditions at the start of this week coated everything here in a crisp blanket of snow. It was beautiful to see, but having slipped over in icy conditions 2 years ago, which led to me needing to have my elbow reconstructed, I am reluctant to leave the safety of home if at all possible when the weather is like this.

Luckily, I am incredibly fortunate to have amazing views from home and this is one of my favourites from Sunday morning. The red of The Pavilion really stands out against the stunning wintery wonderland, with everything dusted with snow, and right down to the shoreline too. It’s a pretty rare sight here on the coast, so to have it stick was lovely. Even with my fear of slipping over when it’s icy, I still wouldn’t mind a few more similar days this winter!

Today’s photo is a simple one: icicles from the roof of a shed. It could have been taken anywhere, but this was taken on the shores of a fjord in the north of Norway. The red-painted wooden boating sheds were weather-worn, especially down one side. The roof was covered in moss and grasses and even some mushrooms. The wintery sun struggled through the largely grey sky, which meant that wider panoramas were a bit lacklustre so I decided to focus more on closer detail. Nature reclaiming the manmade structures, stripping them of their colour, and even then, the grasses fading from green to straw in the harsh winter conditions.

Bodnant Gardens, located in the Conwy Valley, is a stunning world-famous historic garden and arboretum. It is home to the iconic Laburnum Arch which draws hundreds of visitors when it flowers in late May/early June every year. Then there are the Giant Redwoods rising up from the valley floor like great natural cathedrals.

There are several ornamental ponds too, and that is where I found this beautiful specimen of Water-lily, under the shelter of an Atlas Cedar. There is so much to photograph at Bodnant and it’s a place I will continue returning to again and again.

This evening’s photo is actually a still from some video footage I shot earlier this week. Tuesday late afternoon found the pier so peaceful and full of vibrant colour. This is absolutely my favourite time of day. I’m a lover of simple things: shooting stars, falling snow, a roaring fire, waves on the shore - and at the very top of the list, sunsets.

Moments like this feel like pure magic to me. They help recharge my batteries, which have recently felt a little depleted, and bring a wonderful sense of calm and relaxation. It was exactly what I needed.

This evening I thought I would share something a little different to what I usually do and reveal my slightly geeky side - I love all things aviation! Having been an RAF cadet as part of the school Combined Cadet Force, the highlight of any term was our Air Experience Flights and I was lucky enough to fly both Bulldogs from 8AEF at Cosford and Grob Tutors from 3AEF at Colerne. If I could have been anything in the world, I would have been a pilot. The thrill of aerobatics (something that some of my fellow cadets were not well adjusted to!) and the incredible views, will live with me forever.

Being able to combine flying and photography would be my dream job now (if anyone knows of anybody with a plane looking for an Aerial Photographer please give me a shout!) Don’t get me wrong, I love my drone and the photography I am able to do with it, but it doesn’t quite have the same thrill as soaring through the air thousands of feet above the ground!

This photo of a Lancaster Bomber flanked by two Spitfires was taken a few years ago on a birthday trip to the RAF Cosford Airshow, a magical trip down memory lane, indulging my passion for all things aviation. Time to book a return visit methinks!

I’m sorry, I have no story for you this evening. While the pier was closed on Friday due to Storm Claudia, I unfortunately had some significant water ingress into my kiosk, so my attention has been focussed there.
But here’s a short clip taken on Saturday after we’d salvaged as much as we could - it was an undeniably beautiful scene at the end of a rather long stressful day.

The morning light was just stunning on the pier last week - calm, clear, and full of that soft golden glow that makes you want to keep shooting forever. I had already captured a few great shots when these four came elegantly gliding across the still water. They went to head under the pier at first, but when they spotted me with my camera, they changed course and swam right past - they definitely know how photogenic they are!

Taken on the same evening as the photo I shared last week, this image looks toward the northeastern end of the Menai Strait in all its glory. From here, the view stretches from the Great Orme in the distance to the Menai Suspension Bridge and the Swellies in the foreground, with our beautiful pier also visible as the tide came in.

These deceptively tranquil blue waters have been the ruin of many ships over the centuries - perhaps most famously the HMS Conway. It’s said that if you can sail through this treacherous stretch of water, you can sail anywhere in the world!

Church Island sits close to the shore of the Menai Strait, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. On this particular evening, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Dylan’s Restaurant in Menai Bridge, followed by a lovely walk - first under Telford’s Suspension Bridge and then along the Belgian Promenade.

The island offers stunning views of both the Menai Suspension Bridge (recently the subject of traffic restrictions that have made the local area quieter than usual) and the Britannia Bridge, which carries both road and rail traffic across the strait separating mainland Wales from Ynys Môn - the Isle of Anglesey.

Many photographs from here justifiably focus on those spectacular views (and I’ll certainly share some of mine in the future), but this evening I wanted to turn the lens toward the island’s namesake: St Tysilio’s Church. Built in the 15th century and renovated in the 19th, the church is now a Grade II listed building. Despite its small size and lack of electricity, it still holds services, remains popular for weddings, and occasionally hosts other community events.
