Excellent obit of a true photographic legend

The death of the esteemed black-and-white photographer leaves behind a rich library of over 500,000 images showing Earth in all its beauty and darkness

River Dee Riverbank. This is another photo from my Slowing Down exhibition currently running at The Bennachie Visitor Centre. This was taken using a Holga medium format camera, an inexpensive plastic film camera that usually renders the centre of the image nice and sharp but leaves the outside edges a bit blurred. Images from the Holga are usually pretty hit and miss as there are any number of other imperfections that come along with these cameras but when it works it can be special.
The Slowing Down exhibition runs for just 10 more days (until 29th May) so catch it soon.

Leaf Blades. This is one from the Slowing Down exhibition now on at the Bennachie Visitor Centre. I took this on Fomapan 100 film with a Minolta X700 in Caroline's Garden at Crathes. For me this image is all about the bold shapes of the leaves and the texture of the grain but you also get something of the high contrast that this excellent film is capable of. Still one of my favourite films.

Pond Circle. Another old favourite taken at Cormech Loch near Greendams. I think I used the Minolta X700. I really wanted to find a slot for this one in my exhibition but it's portrait orientation not landscape or square. Oh well maybe next time.

This photo of Honesty seeds narrowly missed the cut for my Slowing Down exhibition. Taken on Foma Retropan 320 film with Nikon F5. You need to embrace the grain with this film but the soft tones it produces are lovely.

I'm delighted to announce my first solo public exhibition.
SLOWING DOWN - an exhibition of black and white film photographs will be held at the Bennachie Visitor Centre near Pitcaple from May 2nd - May 29th 2025. I have been doing NEOS (North East Open Studios) for the last few years but for this exhibition I wanted to show my more personal work. All of the pieces were shot on black and white film using a variety of cameras. The practicalities of using these old cameras requires a slower pace than with digital cameras and I'm increasingly drawn to this slower way of working as it allows you time to see things around you in a different way. Slowing down lets you absorb the environment with all your senses. Birdsong, the wind moving the trees, the scents after fresh rain in the forest and the cold blasts of autumn weather become important elements of the final photograph and the memories we take from a place. Slowing down is something we can all benefit from.
