It’s World Photography Day apparently…
Photography has given me so much. Not necessarily in taking me places, but it has come along with me just about everywhere I have been for the past 25 years since I bought an old Olympus OM1 35mm.
It’s not always easy or relaxing doing the freelance dance, but I do feel very fortunate to be able to make a living from a passion.
In no particular order or relevance here are a few frames - some planned, some reactionary, but all treasured moments.

Apparently there was an eclipse yesterday!
We didn’t see s**t through the swathes of passing cloud, but the camera did and almost managed to focus too 🤘🏻

Scenes that need to be seen and felt to be believed.
Any claims that the fire is ‘contained’ or ‘under control’ are bulls**t. Large areas and fronts are burning so hot under the peaty ground that water often boils and evaporates on contact. In the blustery winds yesterday (28th) parts of the ground were glowing like a dragon’s belly and tree root plates were bursting into flame.
So much incredible spirit and superhuman efforts are being put in to the fight, from all on the front line, to welfare support and community fundraising and solidarity.
But until the powers that be mobilise sufficient resources and man power, this will be ongoing for a long time sadly.
Grieving for the forest and habitats that have been lost, and hoping that livelihoods can be supported and hang on in there!

Just as it was starting to look like the beginning of the end…
On Thursday afternoon, after 9 days of fighting the fire, and narrowing in on hotspots and smoulders - the winds picked up and switched direction reigniting flames and sending them into new precious ground with terrifying speed and intensity.
Again - much gratitude and respect to all involved; RSPB team and volunteers, fire brigade, gamekeepers, landowners, foresters, farmers, plant operators, helicopters and many more, all supported by an incredible local, and wider community
The effort will continue, we need the conditions too 🤞🏻

An experience which has been challenging, humbling, surreal and a wee bit smoky.
As ever - immense gratitude and respect to ALL the incredible individuals and teams who’s heroic efforts have been endlessly supported by a wonderful community.

Hard to find the words / feelings watching this unfold. Always been a niggling fear that something like this would happen, yet it doesn’t seem real.
Huge respect and thanks to all out there who have stemmed the advance of the fire and continue to fight - there is a way to go yet.
Here’s to recovery, regeneration, and more resources to tackle anything like this in the future.

CELTMAN 2026
Athletes from across the globe gather to take on this extreme Scottish triathlon. And if it isn’t daunting enough, this year’s weather and conditions were also extremely Scottish.
Brisk winds and horizontal rain - it was a day to embrace the elements and enjoy the lack of midges!
Massive kudos to all who took it on and still managed a bit of craic with the photographer in the most arduous, remote and soggy places…

From scorched earth to cotton bloom, amazing to see the recovery on the site of the country’s largest wildfire.
