All UAS Operators working in the Specific Category against an Operations Manual should push through a quick amendment in their Mandatory Occurrence Reporting section.

The link to the ECCAIRS system has now changed to https://eccairs.icao.int/reporting.

It's always good to have the link in your manual.

This isn't necessarily something I'd have chosen to do. But I believe the industry needs an effective trade body to act as a critical partner to the regulator.

I would ask anybody who believes the same to follow the link, and complete the form on the launch screen.

A cunningly delayed blog…

Sick to the back teeth of “A lookback at…” review articles? My hope and desire is that by leaving this one for a couple of weeks into 2025, you’ll have generated some sort of immunity to review pieces by now. As a small drone operator, working in the Specific Category in particular, it can o...

A musing on the concept of pushing back.

When you notice that something in the regulations doesn’t seem right, it’s best to raise it with the regulator.

If you have an online following, that can be leveraged to amplify the message and obtain quicker results. It’s not always necessary. I’ve obtained great results on CAP2606 this year by combating the CAA enquiries email with every single issue found in the document.

But earlier in the year the “big guns” were considered necessary.

I was sent an email informing me of the CAA’s plan around the annual cost for an Operational Authorisation. You can read the details in the blog linked here. It’s the happy ending blog but links back to the original story.

The original blog was posted on LinkedIn. I post there because I know it will be seen by senior staff at the CAA as well as folk across the government and industry.

The result?

Each and every operator who renewed after April 1 2024 paid £234 instead of £314. That’s a saving of £80 per PDRA01 Operational Authorisation.

From the CAAs latest Annual Safety Report we know there are 2946 OA holders. At any one time there are usually around 100 non-PDRA01 OAs knocking around (to cover ORA/OSCs). I’m going to call it 146 and estimate the number of PDRA01 OA holdersholders at 2800.

Each one saved £80 this year.

That’s a total of 80x2800 = £224,000 saved.

That’s going down as a win.

ALWAYS PUSH BACK.

It’s true The CAA has listened and back-pedalled on its proposed 45% price increase PDRA01 renewals. Just a really short message. The CAA has confirmed that it will no longer increase its charge for a PDRA01 OA renewal by 45%. If you saw the last Eyeup blog, you’d have been rightfully concerned ...
