'A Fox-Moth Caterpillar (My ID)

Overview Courtesy of https://butterfly-conservation.org/moths/fox-moth

This moth is named after its colouration; males are usually foxy-red/brown and females grey-brown. However, moths from cooler upland areas tend to be darker and less red than those from southern areas. Females are larger with considerably longer forewings and lack the feathered antennae of the males. This moth can be distinguished from similar species by the absence of a central white spot on the forewing. The male flies rapidly on sunny afternoons just above the ground searching for females which are nocturnal.

🙌Help shape our bid!

💚We want you to tell us which place in the Geopark is most special to you. It might be the place you go to find the best fossils, or the spot on your favourite dog walk with incredible views of the Downs. You could ask yourself the question: if someone came to visit, where is the one place in the Kent Downs I would take them?

It doesn't have to be the biggest or 'best' site, it can be somewhere that you personally value that isn't so well-known. A building in your town or village with a fascinating history, a tranquil dry valley hidden away down a country lane, the disused quarry where you used to hang out as a kid - we'd love to hear from you.

👉Answer our 2 minute survey and help us tell the story of the Geopark, your answers will help shape our UNESCO bid https://bit.ly/3QaipY7

'A Common Blue' Factsheet
Overview Courtesy of https://butterfly-conservation.org/butterflies/common-blue

The Common Blue is the most widespread blue butterfly in Britain and Ireland and is found in a variety of grassy habitats.

The brightly coloured males are conspicuous but females are more secretive. The colour of the upperwings of females varies from almost completely brown in southern England to predominantly blue in western Ireland and Scotland, but the colour is variable within local populations with some striking examples. Unlike Adonis and Chalkhill Blues, the dark veins do not extend into white fringes of wing margins.

It remains widespread but there have been local declines within its range.
