Pity the poor female toad in the middle of this scrum of males. She’s in real danger of drowning but was just managing the odd gasp of air as the ball tumbled around this seasonal pool in the Highlands of Scotland today.

A glorious day here near the Moray Firth on the 1st March. I was hoping the early morning sun would be enough to bring out the hares in the local fields and it was, despite a hard frost overnight.
The first image just shows that you need to check any 'brown lump' with your binoculars in the fields at this time of year. They are not all molehills or lumps of straw or earth.

My friend John Orr made good use of some of my red deer photos recently in a piece he wrote for the Highlife Highland Ranger Service that he works for. Glad they were useful and helped illustrate his article.

I'm not usually a 'twitcher' but when a snow goose turns up on your doorstep it would be rude not to check it out. Found it yesterday morning in the fields about a 20 minute walk from home with its adopted flock of pink-footed geese.

A lovely couple of hours spent in the woods on Friday morning. The little bank vole was tired of only getting scraps from the table underneath and decided to take matters into its own paws. It had no problem scaling this tree stump or dealing with a whole hazelnut as you can see.
There was a pair of great spotted woodpeckers around, always a treat with their bold colours, as well as a pair of treecreepers. Squirrel shots coming later...

It was incredibly quiet down at Fort George on there Moray Firth yesterday. I thought I'd find all sort of seabirds left sheltering after the recent wind storm but perhaps they'd left already.
Luckily this handsome drake long-tailed duck did make a passing appearance before heading off to parts unknown. Then a single red-breasted merganser passed by but that was it really apart from a few seagulls. No little auks for me yet but we live in hope!

I positioned myself along my local Ardersier Bay recently to watch the sunset over the Black Isle and to try and capture some bird silhouettes against the warm golden glow. These were my two favourites - which one do you prefer?

Spent a fantastic morning with my friend Andy Howard Nature Photography at his hide today here in the Highlands. What a treat it was with the red squirrels and long-tailed t**s putting on a great show for us. These were my favourites. Thanks Andy!
