A rather lovely start to a few days in Bruton, here celebrating EB’s 40th, and a wander took us up to Bruton Dovecote. It dates from around the 16th century, and was later turned into a dovecote with room for a couple of hundred nests. It also, apparently, had spells as a watchtower and somewhere people actually lived, which feels like a lot for one slightly wonky-looking stone tower in a field without a roof…

We’ve got a couple more days around Bruton and Somerset for the birthday celebrations, so recommendations very welcome. Brilliant food, coffee, shops, walks, pubs, odd local discoveries, anything we really shouldn’t miss while we’re here?

Today’s route took me up to La Pendine and along the ridge above Narreyroux. There were moments where it demanded a bit more respect than I’d expected, but that’s often what makes the best days in the mountains.

The reward? Griffon vultures overhead, grasshoppers crackling in the summer heat, and views that made every step worthwhile.

We set out into the Vallée de l’Onde in search of waterfalls and marmots, but a road closure for fire access turned us back at Pont des Places. Probably just as well, because not long afterwards the valley disappeared beneath a proper Alpine storm, with thunder, lightning and wonderfully heavy rain. Sometimes the walk you don’t get to do gives you the best moment of the day.
