Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie 🏰🌧️

One of those unexpected stops that makes an unplanned road trip even better.

After having to abandon the ferry idea, double back and take the long road toward the Skye Bridge, Eilean Donan appeared through the rain and low Highland cloud. The wet stone bridge, brooding sky and mist curling around the hills made the whole place feel wonderfully dramatic.

Sometimes the detour becomes the best part of the journey.

Red Eyes in the Garden 🔴🔍

Another tiny subject found while exploring Greenbank Garden in Clarkston.

Likely a flesh fly, but once viewed through a macro lens it becomes far more than the ordinary insect most people would walk straight past. Those enormous red compound eyes are made from thousands of individual lenses, surrounded by intricate hairs, textures and details almost invisible to the naked eye.

The closer you look, the stranger the familiar world becomes.

Not Everything Furry Is a Bee 🐝🔍

At first glance, this visitor at Greenbank Garden had me thinking bumblebee. Once I moved in closer, those enormous fly eyes and delicate transparent wings told a different story.

Resting right in the centre of a vivid purple flower, it gave me the perfect opportunity to capture the textures, pollen and tiny details that disappear at normal viewing distance.

The garden kept delivering one miniature world after another.

The Garden’s Tiny Tank 🪵🛡️

Tucked away on a piece of damp wood at Greenbank Garden was this beautifully armoured woodlouse.

They’re easy to dismiss as ordinary garden creatures, but through a macro lens every overlapping plate, joint and tiny eye becomes part of an intricate suit of armour.

Woodlice are actually land-dwelling crustaceans and play an important role as miniature recyclers, feeding on decaying plant material and returning nutrients to the soil.

Veins of Violet 💜🌿

Another find from my wander around Greenbank Garden before heading to the skate park.

Among all the greenery, this hardy geranium caught the light beautifully. The closer I looked, the more those deep purple veins began to resemble a delicate network running through every petal.

One of several macro subjects I photographed during the visit, and proof that even a quick walk can reveal something worth stopping for.

A flash of colour at Lochwinnoch 🦋💜

A red admiral pausing among the purple flowers at RSPB Lochwinnoch.

Even in a place filled with birds and wider landscapes, it is often the smaller moments that catch my eye. A brief pause, a burst of colour, then it was back on the wing.

Another tiny discovery from my wander around Greenbank Garden before heading to the skate park.

This long-legged crane fly was resting beneath a leaf, its translucent wings and impossibly delicate frame glowing against the dark background.

They’re usually dismissed as awkward insects bouncing around windows, but through a macro lens the structure of those wings and the strange little details become something completely different.

Foam, a survivor from Glasgow’s lost Empire Exhibition 🌿⛲

I stopped at Greenbank Garden in Clarkston for a wander with the camera before heading to the skate park, expecting flowers, insects and a few macro subjects.

Instead, this fountain sculpture immediately stole my attention.

The statue is called Foam, a bronze water nymph created by Scottish sculptor Charles d’Orville Pilkington Jackson for Glasgow’s Empire Exhibition at Bellahouston Park in 1938. It originally stood among several mythical figures, but while the others were sold, Pilkington Jackson kept Foam. She now forms the centrepiece of a circular pool designed especially for her at Greenbank Garden.

The falling water, dramatic pose and weathered surface gave the scene an eerie, dreamlike quality that worked perfectly with the selective-colour edit.

I also found a few smaller macro subjects around the garden, so there’s more from this visit still to come. 🔍

Water Lily Leaf Beetle (Galerucella nymphaeae) 🪲

"A face only a macro photographer could appreciate"

This tiny Water Lily Leaf Beetle was photographed during an evening wander around Loch Etive. At just a few millimetres long it's easy to overlook, but up close the details are incredible. Compound eyes, sensory hairs and armour-like textures that most of us never get to see.

Proof that the smallest subjects often have the biggest stories."

Life finds a way, even on the smallest stage. 🍃

Hidden among the grasses of Loch Etive, these two soldier beetles carried on completely unaware of the world around them. It's moments like this that remind me just how much life is happening beneath our feet if we slow down enough to look.
