In two weeks time I’ll be taking part in Kiltwalk again. Raising money once again for Finding Your Feet, a fantastic local charity supporting amputees and their families. If you could spare a couple of quid I’d be extremely grateful. An enormous thanks to those who have donated. It means a lot. Cheers ❤️

The Dark Side

Male red fox siblings
It’s very unusual for male foxes to stay in a family unit in maturity, but these brothers have stuck together since they were cubs. The weather has been so dreich recently, this shot is from early January when the light was decent. We really need some decent dry weather!

A sticky situation

I can’t recall who said foxes are like dogs hardware running with cat software. It’s a phrase that’s always stuck with me. In this instance playing with and chewing sticks is quintessentially dog-like. Sticks are chewed out of curiosity, play, to relieve boredom and to clean teeth. This behaviour is seen in both wild and captive foxes.

The Prophet

Green woodpecker (Picus viridis)
Another trip today to see if I could spot these extraordinary birds. Treated to good views of the male this afternoon (albeit from a fair distance) with the red mark in his dark ‘moustache’ distinguishing him from the fully black colouring of the female.
Following on from my previous post, woodpeckers are said to be messengers of change and transformation, and generally viewed as a positive omen.

It was lovely to sit in the woods and to hear the loud and distinctive laughing call, which totally contradicts their shyness. Also saw great spotted woodpeckers in the same area.

Guardian of the Trees

A record shot of a green woodpecker (Picus viridis) taken yesterday. I’ve wanted to see one for so long, and it was an absolute treat to see a pair together. The light was poor so this was the best I could manage of this female.
Woodpeckers are steeped in Celtic folklore, viewed as prophetic birds, guardian of the trees and bridging the gap between the divine and material worlds. Known as yaffles or ‘rain birds’ their laughing call is said to foretell rain and stormy weather.
