“I don’t think I need a newborn shoot.”

It’s true, you don’t… Because you already have a phone. And your phone can take some brilliant photographs.

You can photograph the sleepy faces, the tiny hands, the first smiles and all the everyday moments. You don’t need a professional photographer to prove that your baby was little…

So what are you actually getting with a newborn photoshoot?

The photograph you couldn’t have taken yourself.

Not because your phone isn’t good enough.

Because a professional photograph is about much more than the camera.

It’s about creating the image.

The lighting is deliberately chosen.

The background, colours and textures are considered.

Your baby is positioned carefully and safely.

The composition is intentional.

The image is photographed from the angle that makes everything work together.

What’s created are portraits that deserve more than a place on your camera roll. They are beautiful enough to display, gift and share.

That’s the difference.

If you are considering a newborn photoshoot for your new baby, or if you can any questions at all, please do get in touch with me. No question is not worth asking!

If you are worried your baby won’t “behave” for their newborn session, read this:

Your baby doesn’t need to arrive perfectly sleepy.

They don’t need to sleep through the entire session.

They don’t need to stay in exactly the position we put them in.

And you definitely don’t need to apologise if they need feeding, changing, cuddling or settling.

They are a newborn.

It’s what they do!

I have many tricks up my sleeve to help settle and encourage sleep. I am VERY experienced in handling babies, I can read them and know their cues.

I am asked all the time to be on speed dial for sleepless nights for the clients who have seen me in action!!!

However, a newborn session isn’t always about getting your baby to cooperate perfectly for a few hours.

It’s about allowing enough time for the baby to be a baby while I work around them. I will handle the rest.

So please don’t spend the days before your session worrying about whether your baby will be “good”.

Come as you are.

I will take care of your baby and the photographs

Such and incredibly beautiful lady inside and out

I absolutely loved this maternity photoshoot. We spent some time creating a variety of portraits, and sometimes the best galleries happen when the client has some ideas in mind.

So when this lovely lady came into her maternity session with a few ideas of her own, we worked together to collaborate.

We took the poses, styling and images she had been drawn to, then added in some of the things I knew would work beautifully for her, her bump and the light in the studio.

And that’s what I love about a maternity session.

You don’t have to arrive knowing exactly what you want. You also don’t have to hand everything over to me and simply follow instructions.

We worked it out together.

The result was a gallery that felt completely personal to her, while still having that Ava Violet Photography feel.

And honestly, that combination created some gorgeous portraits that we both loved!

As a busy mum and a business owner, there is always something I could be doing.

Taking the photographs.
Editing the photographs.
Replying to messages.
Creating content.
Thinking about what I should post next… etc, etc…

And somewhere amongst all of that, it is very easy to forget why I take photographs in the first place.

It’s simple… To stop time for a moment.

This photograph is a good example of why I think it is so important to include photographs of mum or dad holding their newborn during a newborn session.

We naturally take hundreds of photographs of our babies. Their tiny hands, their eyelashes, their little faces, all those details that seem to change almost overnight. But the photographs that often become the most meaningful are the ones that show the relationship.

However, how many photographs do we actually have of ourselves with them?

Mums are often the ones behind the camera. We are the ones taking the photograph, capturing everyone else’s memories, and making sure everyone else is in the frame.

I don’t want mums to look back at her baby’s first days and realise that she is missing from them.

Because this photograph isn’t just about the baby.

It is about her.

It’s about showing her how beautiful she is, and capturing her in a way that she feels comfortable and confident.

It is about the way her baby fits against her. The tiny hand resting on her. The way she holds them.

Those things might feel completely ordinary now, but the memories will fade.

Your baby will grow. Their face will change. Their little body will become bigger and heavier. The way they curl into you will eventually become a memory.

And one day, this photograph won’t just remind you what your baby looked like.

It will remind you what it felt like to hold them.

Back from holiday, and back behind the camera.

I’ve been a little quiet on here lately. Life, work, and a couple of months of not really wanting to be glued to social media meant I took a step back online.

A week of sunshine, sea, slow mornings, good food, spending time with my husband and our boy and absolutely no alarm clocks was exactly what I needed.

Now I’m back home, back in the studio and back behind the camera, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck back into photographing all the lovely families, babies and growing bumps 🥰

So, consider this my official return to Instagram/facebook.

I have plenty to share from the last few months, some beautiful sessions that I never got around to showing you, and lots more coming up.

It’s good to be back.

Why is a newborn photoshoot important?

When you’re in the middle of newborn life, you ate focused on feeding schedules, sleep deprivation and working out what day it is.

You don’t always notice the details.

The tiny expressions.

The way they curl up naturally.

The features that will change far sooner than you expect.

That’s one reason these photographs matter.

Don’t forget to book your newborn photoshoot before it’s too late!

How stunning is this lovely lady?!

I had the best time photographing her and her beautiful family. I absolutely love creating a maternity photoshoot to make my ladies look and feel gorgeous and confident.

But I also love creating portraits for families before their life changes with their new arrival.

Because, whether this is your first baby or your second, third... this version of your family only exists once. It is so important to capture it forever

One of the biggest misconceptions about maternity photography is that you need to feel confident.

To be honest most of my ladies are usually arrive filled with nerves or apprehension.

The confidence usually appears somewhere between seeing the dresses I have in my wardrobe, or being guided through the posing, and if not by then, it suddenly appears when viewing the final pictures.

Confidence is often the result, not the requirement.

That smile 🤍
Newborn smiles are one of those little moments parents never want to forget.

Whether it’s a reflex, a dream, or something else entirely, seeing a tiny smile appear for the first time is enough to stop you in your tracks.

The newborn days pass so quickly. One minute they are all curled up in your arms, and before you know it, they are sitting up, walking and growing into their own little person.

Photographs preserve those moments. The tiny fingers, the sleepy stretches, and every now and then, a beautiful smile like this one.

These are the moments that you will love to look back on.

✨Newborn sessions are best booked during pregnancy to secure availability.
