Creative Flower Photography at Ilkley Camera Club

Flowers may be one of the most familiar subjects in photography, but internationally acclaimed photographer Colin Harrison FRPS FIPF FBPE MFIAP MPAGB EFIAP/d3 MPSA GPSA AWPF APAGB is set to demonstrate just how far they can be taken creatively.
Ilkley Camera Club is welcoming Colin Harrison for a special illustrated lecture, “Creative Flower Photography”, on Friday 4 September at 7.30pm.
Harrison is an award-winning photographer whose work ranges from macro photography and creative floral images to surreal digital photomontages and highly imaginative composite pictures. He is particularly interested in using photography and digital processing to create images that go beyond simply recording what is in front of the camera.
His approach to flowers is especially inventive. His techniques have included compressing or freezing flowers before photographing them, as well as using macro photography and creative post-processing to produce striking, highly detailed floral images.
For Harrison, creativity has been a central part of his photographic journey. He began taking photographs as a teenager, initially documenting disappearing steam locomotives around the world. By 1980 his photographic style had moved towards more creative and pictorial work, and he subsequently developed an impressive career exhibiting, judging and lecturing internationally.
He has been awarded Fellowships by the Royal Photographic Society, the British Photographic Exhibitions and the Irish Photographic Federation, as well as the prestigious Master FIAP (MFIAP) distinction. He is also an approved national and international judge for the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain and sits on the Licentiateship Panel of the Royal Photographic Society.
But perhaps the most interesting aspect of the evening is what his work says about photography itself. Rather than simply asking how to take a better photograph of a flower, Harrison challenges us to consider what else a photograph of a flower could become.
“Creative Flower Photography” promises an inspiring evening for anyone interested in flowers, macro photography, creative image-making or simply discovering new possibilities with a camera.
