This weekend’s edition comes after three wonderful days in Torridon and Assynt, privately guiding and mentoring two photographers who travelled from Pennsylvania to experience the Scottish Highlands.

Have you ever arrived at a spectacular landscape and felt completely overwhelmed by everything in front of you?

The temptation is to start taking photographs immediately, hoping that one of them will work. But sometimes the best thing you can do is leave the camera in the bag, slow down and simply observe.

In this short video, I explain how breaking a complex landscape into smaller pieces can help you make sense of the scene—and ultimately create a much more considered photograph.

What exactly is a photography workshop?

Is it simply travelling somewhere beautiful with a camera?
Is it about coming home with great photographs?
Is it tuition? Guidance? Experience?
Or should it be something more?

With my new winter workshop season about to begin, I've been thinking a lot about these questions — and about everything I've learned from years of running photography workshops.

So I've decided to write a new series of 14 articles which will be published on my website over the coming weeks and will form a permanent reference titled:

INSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

Over the coming weeks I'll be taking an honest and personal look at photography workshops — what they are, why people join them, how to choose one, the importance of the workshop leader, expectations, what happens behind the scenes, what makes a workshop successful and, eventually, what the future of photography workshops might look like.

No hard sell. Just my own experiences, thoughts and opinions from years spent doing this.
