A few days ago things took an unexpected turn when we had to drive our motor home about an hour back north to have a technical issue attended to.

Once everything was sorted, we made our way to a peaceful overnight stop near the village of Avolsheim, parking beside the "Dompeter", the oldest church in Alsace.

As the evening settled in, we enjoyed a leisurely walk along the nearby river, following paths that wound past vast golden wheat fields swaying gently in the breeze.

Before sunset, I spent a few minutes flying my drone above the area, capturing stunning views of the historic church, the winding river, and the patchwork of fields stretching across the Alsatian countryside. The tranquil surroundings and beautiful aerial perspectives provided the perfect way to unwind after a day spent on the road.

Our visit to the beautiful Riquewihr began with a leisurely walk from our motorhome parking area (Park4night ref #390185), about ten minutes outside the village.

Following a path through the surrounding vineyards, we were treated to stunning views of neatly arranged rows of vines stretching across the rolling Alsatian countryside. As the medieval village came into view, its distinctive half-timbered houses and ancient defensive walls stood proudly against the backdrop of the Vosges foothills.

Before entering the village, we paused to launch the drone and capture the scene from above. From the air, the true beauty of Riquewihr revealed itself, with its narrow streets winding between colourful historic buildings, all enclosed within centuries-old fortifications and surrounded by a patchwork of vineyards. It was easy to understand why this remarkable village is often called the “Jewel of Alsace.”

Passing through the old gateway, we stepped into a world that felt untouched by time. The cobbled streets were lined with beautifully preserved half-timbered houses adorned with overflowing flower boxes in every colour imaginable. Around every corner were charming wine shops, tasting rooms, artisan boutiques, and inviting cafés, each adding to the village’s unique character. The scent of fresh pastries drifted through the air while visitors wandered slowly, taking in the rich history and atmosphere.

Exploring the winding lanes revealed countless hidden details, including ornate wooden doors, centuries-old signs, colourful shutters, and quiet courtyards tucked away from the main street. Every street seemed more picturesque than the last.

As we wandered through this enchanting village, surrounded by history, flowers, and the celebrated vineyards of Alsace, it felt as though we had stepped into a storybook, making our day in Riquewihr one of the most memorable of our travels through France so far.

We spent an afternoon day cycling to the neighbouring medieval village of Hunawihr from Ribeauville, following quiet roads lined with vineyards and rolling countryside. As we entered the village, we were greeted by its brightly painted half-timbered houses, overflowing flower boxes, and charming streets that seemed untouched by time. Every turn revealed another postcard-perfect scene, with colorful façades and centuries-old architecture reflecting the rich heritage of this beautiful corner of Alsace.

Our ride gradually climbed toward the historic Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Church, which stands proudly above the village and offers sweeping views across the surrounding vineyards. From this elevated vantage point, I launched my drone and watched as the landscape unfolded beneath us. Through the camera's eye, the patchwork of vineyards, winding village lanes, and the church rising above the rooftops created a breathtaking panorama. From above, Hunawihr revealed its true character, a timeless medieval gem nestled among the vines, framed by the gentle hills of the Alsace wine region.

Enjoy the video (and soundtrack) I put together showing the beauty of Hunawihr!

Our time in the historic town of Ribeauvillé felt like stepping into another century. Surrounded by vineyards and framed by the rolling hills of the Alsace wine region, the town was full of colour and character. As we wandered through the narrow cobbled streets, every corner revealed beautifully preserved half-timbered houses, flower-filled balconies, and centuries-old buildings rich with history. The atmosphere was peaceful yet lively, with cafés, wine cellars, and small shops adding to the charm of the village.

Also cycling through the streets gave us a different perspective of Ribeauvillé. The quiet lanes and scenic surroundings made it easy to slow down and appreciate the details, the decorative facades, old fountains, and the gentle rhythm of everyday life in the town. Riding between the vineyards and historic streets, with the mountains rising in the background, created the perfect blend of nature and history that makes Alsace so memorable.

One of the highlights was flying my drone above the village and into the hills overlooking the town. From the air, Ribeauvillé looked even more magical, its colourful rooftops clustered beneath the Vosges mountains and surrounded by endless rows of vineyards. The drone flight up toward the three ancient castle ruins — Château de Saint-Ulrich, Château du Girsberg, and Château du Haut-Ribeaupierre revealed breathtaking views of the valley and town below.

Perched high above the town, the castles stood proudly on the mountainside, their weathered stone walls telling stories of centuries past while watching over Ribeauvillé and the Alsace plain beyond.

An amazing few days spent in the historical and beautiful town of Ribeauvillé, France.

Our two nights that we spent in Thannenkirch were a peaceful escape into the quiet beauty of the Alsace countryside. We managed to find a relatively flat parking spot just as you're entering the village (see Park4night ref #494612).

Surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests, the small village had a calm and welcoming atmosphere that immediately slowed the pace of travel. We spent time wandering through the quiet streets, passing traditional Alsatian homes with flower-filled balconies and enjoying the fresh mountain air that seemed to linger throughout the village.

One of the highlights of our stay was hiking along one of the forest trails above the town. The path wound gently through tall pine trees and shaded woodland, with birdsong and the occasional rustle of leaves breaking the silence. As we climbed higher, glimpses of the valley began to appear through the trees before the trail eventually opened up to a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Thannenkirch and the surrounding countryside. From above, the village looked tucked neatly into the green landscape, with distant hills stretching across the horizon.

The combination of peaceful village walks and the scenic forest hike made our short stay feel wonderfully refreshing. Thannenkirch was the kind of place that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy the quiet charm of nature and small-town France.
