WE ARE CORALS
THE REEF SERIES

PORTRAIT 01 /// CHRISTOPHE

A reef from Komodo National Park, Indonesia

One face. One reef. One image.

Christophe Bailhache opens a new cycle of WE ARE CORALS portraits, which I will share through December.

Here, his portrait meets a reef from Komodo National Park. Two real photographs, manually hybridised. No artificial intelligence involved.

WE ARE CORALS is a photographic work at the crossroads of art and science. Through it, I turn the human portrait into a territory of symbiosis, making our belonging to the living world visible.

We are singular, but never separate.

Thank you, Christophe, for stepping into WE ARE CORALS, and becoming a coral reef, if only for a moment. 😊

More portraits will be revealed over the coming weeks.

Are you looking to develop a project that gives the living world a meaningful place , an exhibition, an encounter, or a visual creation?

Get in touch. Let’s imagine something true, singular and alive together.

🌊 I was happy to speak at the Biarritz Film Festival Nouvelles Vagues for the panel “The Power of Images”, alongside Raphaël De Wael from BLOOM Association and Romain Violleau from BIZKAIA Exploration.

Together, we explored one essential question:
How can images help us see the ocean differently, feel more connected to it… and want to protect it?

For my part, I shared how photography can become a bridge between emotion, science, and action.

Because a strong image does more than show, it can awaken curiosity, create connection, and sometimes even inspire change.

Thank you to the festival, to Canon France and Canon EMEA Pro, to my fellow speakers, and to everyone who joined us for this conversation.

📩 And if you’d like to imagine a talk, an exhibition, or a visual project around coral inspiration for your organization, feel free to send me a message.

🌊 Happy to be speaking at the Biarritz Film Festival Nouvelles Vagues alongside Canon for a talk exploring an essential question:

How can photography and imaging technologies change the way we see the ocean, and inspire us to protect it?

Through my work as a marine biologist and photographer, I’ll share how images can create emotion, shift perspectives, and strengthen our connection to the living world.

A big thank you to the whole Canon France and Canon EMEA Pro Canon teams for their trust, support, and commitment. 🙏

And if you’d like to imagine a talk, an exhibition, or an inspiring visual project around coral, the ocean, and the living world for your organization, feel free to send me a message.

🏆🪸 Honoured to receive the Creative Vision Pascal Lecocq Award at the Ocean Geographic Picture of the Year for one of my "WE ARE CORALS" portraits.

Thank you so much to the whole Ocean Geographic Society team for this recognition, and thank you Alice Arthaud for being part of this image.

WE ARE CORALS is an artistic project where I merge a human portrait with coral photographed in fluorescence. A visual chimera, created through photography, to question our place within the living world.

For me, this project is a way of bringing art and science together:

to speak about the origins of life, our deep connection to other species, and to share something that is sometimes difficult to explain with words alone.

Corals have shaped life in the ocean for millions of years.
What if they could also inspire the way we live, create, and protect?

This award also marks the beginning of a larger photographic journey :

I am now developing "WE ARE CORALS" with inspiring figures working to protect the marine world. Soon Dr Jamie Craggs Charlotte Meyer Sofiane Benyahia, Luciole ...

If this universe resonates with you, and if you’d like to imagine a portrait, an exhibition, or a meaningful collaboration, feel free to reach out.

Happy to share this portrait published in Imertium’s Gazette.

In this interview, I speak about my journey as a marine biologist and photographer, and about what has driven me for years: bringing art and science together to tell stories about coral, the living world, and our connection to the sea.

Thank you to the IMERTIUM team for the invitation, and to Géraldine Gevaudan for this conversation. 🤗

Thank you Jules Roeser for the portrait pictures. 😉 And for being my WE ARE CORAL model to do the cover!

And if you’d like to step further into my world, feel free to subscribe to my Blue Letter, my monthly newsletter about coral, water, photography, and the living world. 💙I put the link in comment.
