Gorey Castle as it is popularly known by locals was built in the 13th century as the island’s main defence against the French whose coastline was only 14 miles away. The castle was built at Mont Orgueil because sea and cliffs protected the castle on three sides. Also, the granite that the castle was built on meant that it was virtually impossible to undermine. During the next century it survived sporadic attacks and a 7 year occupation by the French and was the English Crown’s administration centre, home to the Governor of Jersey. It was also a desolate home to debtors, criminals and the occasional suspected witch. By the 16th century however, Mont Orgueil Castle was out of date. With the new ship-mounted cannon and gunpowder, it was now open to attack from the bay and the hill opposite so a new castle was built to replace it, nearer to the strategic port of St. Helier (Elizabeth Castle)

Havre Des Pas Swimming Pool was built by the Jersey Swimming Club, which was formed in 1865 following the tragic drowning of two young boys in the sea at Havre des Pas. There were many witnesses but nobody knew how to swim so the boys could not be rescued when they got into difficulty. The pool provided a safe place to hold swimming lessons, and there were regular swimming and diving competitions as well as gala events. The pool fell into disrepair when the Island’s first indoor pool was opened at Fort Regent leisure centre in 1972. However, it was restored in 2000 and has benefitted from today’s growing interest in sea swimming.
It is one of the oldest bathing pools in the British Isles.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall llocated in Derbyshire. It was once a grand example of 18th century English architecture, but now stands as a haunting relic of the past. Built in 1724 for the 4th Earl of Scarsdale, the hall was a symbol of wealth and power, on a scale with Chatsworth House.

When the owners' fortunes fell into decline, so did the hall. By the early 20th century, it was stripped of its valuable materials, with parts of the interiors now in America. Today, what remains of the once stately home is a roofless shell, a stark reminder of its former glory.

The Avro Vulcan XH558 Spirit of Great Britain, which was built in about 1960, was the last of the iconic bombers in military service and, after 1986, was the last to fly at all. Its last flight ever was on October 28th in 2015.

Vulcan bombers carried Britain’s nuclear deterrent during part of the cold war. They were retired from RAF service in March 1993.

This Vulcan is preserved & maintained by The Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) - https://vulcantothesky.org

The Château de La Motte-Feuilly is a medieval castle located deep in the Berry province and boasts fascinating history and architecture. The castle was first mentioned in the 12 century during the Hundred Years War.

Its two main towers were built in 1360 and 1420 by Drouin de Vaudenay, child of a family from Burgundy. The keep is crowned by hoarding and the gate tower by machicolation.

Its most illustrious owner was Charlotte d’Albret, abandoned wife of the tenebrous Cesare Borgia, son of the Pope Alexandre VI, and sister of Jean III, King of Navarre and great-grandfather of d’Henri IV. It was Charlotte who built the chapel perched on two helical columns.

The castle served as the home of the beautiful Lauriane in George Sand’s novel « Les beaux messieurs de Bois-Doré ».

Its park boasts a millennial yew tree and a row of Virginian tulip trees, among other pluri-centenarian trees, a floral vegetable garden and a sanctuary for farm animals.

Peveril Castle sits with a commanding position overlooking Castleton, Hope Valley & the surrounding hills of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire 🇬🇧.
The 11th century castle played a significant role in securing control of England following the Norman Conquest. The castle is a Grade 1-listed building, managed by English heritage.
Peveril Castle’s origins can be traced back to the Norman Conquest, when William the Conqueror and his knights reshaped the landscape with castles and fortificiations. Founded in 1080 by William Peveril, one of William the Conqueror’s trusted aides, the castle was a formidable stronghold that played a key role in securing Norman control over the region. One of the most remarkable features is its stark yet sophisticated architectural design. The stone-built structure, encompassing a keep and curtain wall, offers a glimpse into the military and architectural prowess of the Normans.
